After your cruise ship docks in Dublin, depart for County Wicklow on a shore excursion with a knowledgeable guide. Relax aboard a comfortable coach for about one hour as you take in the gorgeous scenery – including the Emerald Isle’s iconic lush green countryside. On the way, travel along the coast and through the granite uplands of Wicklow Mountain National Park, which surrounds the city of Dublin.
When you arrive at Powerscourt, a beautiful 68-room country estate completed in 1741, explore the surrounding gardens. The mansion stands on the site of a former 13th-century castle, originally owned by the Le Power family. In 1603, Queen Elizabeth granted the land to Richard Wingfield, whose descendants maintained the grounds for more than 350 years, planting Japanese gardens and a variety of trees.
As you stroll through the wooded grounds, learn more from your guide about the history and design of the Powerscourt Gardens. Stand next to the house to see vistas of the parkland and tree plantations heading north, and walk through the walled gardens to the south. Admire the tree-lined avenue as well as a fishpond, cascades, grottos and terraces.
After lunch (own expense), return to Dublin for a coach tour of the capital city and enjoy commentary from your guide about its rich cultural history. First, visit several galleries and museums to view the superb collections. Then, catch sight of all the top attractions, including Dublin Castle, Merrion Square, St Patrick’s Cathedral, Trinity College, Phoenix Park, O’Connell Street and the Guinness brewery.
Your coach tour ends with return to the Dublin cruise port.
