Depart Dublin. Kilbeggan Whiskey distillery visit, this is oldest Pot Still distillery in the world. Travel through Counties Dublin, Kildare, West Meath, Roscommon and Galway. Cross the mighty River Shannon and discover the green fields and stone walls of the west. Ross Errily Friary where you can explore the lonely ruins of this ancient Franciscan order. (Picnic Lunch, weather permitting). Ashford Castle - once home to the Guinness family. Connemara - Heading west into the Connemara region, famous for its wild and rugged landscape and stunning scenery. Hike the Pilgrims Path or walk along an ancient path of prayer through the Mamturk Mountains.
Overnight Accommodation: Roundstone Village - beautiful fishing village with superb beaches nearby and great view of the mountains. Also home to Malachy Kearns, Ireland's most famous traditional drum maker. Great pubs and live music.
Day 2:
Horse-riding - Ballyconneely/Cleggan. Rent horses for a gallop along the beach or drive across the Omey Island at low tide. Explore the rocky coastline of Connemara with hidden coves, traditional fishing boats and ruined cottages. Clifden, the "capital" of Connemara, is a quaint town with multicolored houses, pubs and lots of tweed. Kylemore Abbey is a neo-gothic mansion nestled beneath the mountains. One of Ireland's most beautiful buildings, but with a tragic past.
Killary Harbour - Ireland's only fjord. Hike along an abandoned famine road in the footsteps of your ancestors. Surrounded by the wilds of Connemara, spot some seals or otters or just sit on a stone wall and enjoy the isolation. Leenane for some quick pints in "The Field Pub", named after the movie which was filmed here, at the head of Killary Harbour. Cross into County Mayo through the Mweelrea Mountains. Breathtaking views at Doolough Valley where many perished during The Great Hunger.
Silver Strand is a hidden wonder. Beyond the reach of mortal tourists a white sandy haven overlooking the Atlantic islands. A chance of an evening BBQ (if you're up for it !). Surfing in the Atlantic, catch a wave off the west coast and be part of the fastest growing sport in Ireland. It could be the start of something beautiful (for beginners and experienced dudes). Grace O'Malley country - hear tales of the pirate Queen of the West and see Clare island from where she once ruled the waves. St Patrick's Reek, from where the snakes were banished from Ireland. Take a stroll up this epic pilgrimage mountain. Lose a sin with every step. Picnic on the slopes and look down upon the panorama of Clew Bay. Take a stroll through the vibrant and colorful town of Westport. North Mayo where you can explore the lonely bogs and moorlands around the Nephin Beag Mountains. Remote and beautiful, a wild area depopulated by the ravages of the 19th Century Famines.
Overnight Accommodation: Enniscrone - a surfy seaside town with a fantastic beach for an evening stroll. Local pubs with great food and entertainment.
Day 3:
Depart Enniscrone and head north into the far reaches of Co. Sligo. Strandhill where you can relax, unwind and absorb the essence of the ocean in a Sea-Weed Bath. A traditional remedy to re-invigorate and refresh. Alternatively show off your surfing skills or simply stroll along the shell strewn sand. Knock-na-Rea - climb this ancient escarpment and visit the burial tomb of Queen Maeve, Warrior Queen of old. Bring a stone to her chamber for good luck but if you wake her don't look her in the eye.
The River Shannon - explore through the Shannon basin of lakes, forests , megalithic tombs and traditional villages. Return to Leinster, re-entering the Pale and leaving the West behind as you head East for the Fair City of Dublin.
