What You Can Expect
In the 11th century, the sea channel separating the city from mainland was covered up with earth, so a single wall was built to enclose the present-day Old Town. The city walls have been restored several times in history to resemble their original appearance. With your guide, see Fort Revelin and Minceta Tower within the city walls (entrance fees not included), and learn the strategic position of these forts and their role in Dubrovnik's history. You will also see Fort Lovrijenac in the distance, the only fort that belongs to the city walls but it's physically separated from them, and which you may visit after the tour.
As you wander around Dubrovnik's ancient walls, your guide will explain the defensive and political challenges faced by Dubrovnik in the past. Hear stories of the rivalry and conquest Dubrovnik has faced and learn the secrets of how the country used defensive fortifications and diplomacy to remain an independent republic for several years, before ending your tour near the port.
The brilliant walk was greatly enhanced by our guide who gave us the history and a personal insight to the recent war in Croatia
This was an excellent tour lead by a bright, informative Guide in Marija. Happy to recommend.
Really cool. Interesting tour of the city walls with fascinating history of the city and spectacular views. Plus our guide was really entertaining.
This was a fabulous tour! Our guide, Marko, was excellent! He stopped every so often, and gave a dramatic version of each aspect of the history of Dubrovnik!!! Highly recommend if you have Marko as your guide!!!!!
I was initially dubious about a walking tour it sounded like something my Granny would do but this was the best 2.5 hours we spent in Dubrovnik. Our tour guide was entertaining, knowledgeable and provided just the amount of detail to keep us engage throughout. He truly brought the fascinating and tumultuous history of Dubrovnik alive for us. I would highly recommend this tour as the first activity you undertake in Dubrovnik as it really sets the stage for the remainder of the visit.
very hot - but enough shade. Excellent trip and very informative. Do not miss it.
Highly recommended and a great way to get a ton of history in just a few hours. Dubrovnik is an amazingly unique town and the guide on this trip was incredible!
Tour guide was full of in-depth knowledge of the history of the wall, as well as the general history of Croatia. Kept a good pace for everyone. Gave us a quick history of the recent conflicts. Very friendly. Definitely recommend.
I'm typically not a fan of guided tours, but my wife and I booked a walking tour of the Ancient City Walls through Viator and I'm so glad we did.
The views of the city and Adriatic are amazing from up on the Walls, but our guidewho grew up in Dubrovnik, but spoke excellent Englishadded immeasurably to the experience.
She shared the history of the city and its walls as we walked, and also gave us plenty of more recent history related to Game of Thrones, which was fun. Our guide's name was Marija and, if you're lucky enough to get her, you're in for a treat!
My wife and I were actually the only people who showed up for the morning tour and, technically, our guide could have cancelled the vouchers for the tour stipulated a minimum of four participants. But, instead, she agreed to take just the two of us along the southern half of the Wall, which extends along the seait felt like our own, private tour, and it still lasted over an hour versus the typical two hours suggested for the entire wall. Given the high heat and humidity on this particular day, this half-tour worked out perfectly.
Even if, like me, you're not a fan of guided tours, this is one instance where it's absolutely worth the expense and effort.
Our tour guide Marco was fantastic. He was enthusiastic and extremely entertaining. I would recommend anyone who wishes to explore the city to book this tour as we enjoyed every minute - even in the extremely hot conditions. Thanks again Viator for choosing such great operators.
