What You Can Expect

West Highland Lochs and Castles Small Group Day Trip from Edinburgh

Kilchurn Castle, Scotland

Board a 16-passenger luxury minivan in central Edinburgh in the morning and set off on a journey toward the Scottish Highlands. Traveling west first, make a photo stop at Stirling Castle, once known as the 'Key to Scotland.' It was here that William Wallace — immortalized by Mel Gibson in the film Braveheart — defeated the English army in 1297.

Continue to the fantastic medieval stronghold of Doune Castle. Built for the Duke of Albany more than 600 years ago, the castle is still in remarkable condition. You may recognize it from the famous film Monty Python and The Holy Grail or the more recent Outlander TV series, based on the books by Diana Gabaldon.

Leave the rolling farmlands behind and venture into the wild forests and dramatic mountains of the Scottish Highlands. Hear the story of the ‘Scottish Robin Hood’ in the Braes of Balquhidder, the final resting place of Highland outlaw Rob Roy MacGregor. Wind your way through the Breadalbane mountains, stopping for lunch (own expense), and arrive at the magnificent ruins of Kilchurn Castle perched on Loch Awe.

Continuing through Campbell country, visit the picturesque town of Inveraray on the shores of Loch Fyne, where you can visit 18th-century Inveraray Castle, home of the Duke of Argyll.

Trek up the steep Arrochar Alps to a fantastic viewpoint called 'Rest and Be Thankful,’ and learn the meaning behind the name from your guide. From here, skirt around Loch Long and down to Loch Lomond, Scotland's largest lake. Pause in the village of Luss for stunning views across the water.

Return to Edinburgh in the evening.

What a great tour. I do wish we could have gone into more castles but the weather was difficult. Our driver/tour guide did an amazing job and we especially loved her stories and her enthusiasm for sharing Scotland's history was great.

Absolutely phenomenal! Our tour guide, Aaron Mohr, really made it the best! He clearly loves his job and his country and the tour reflects that. The weather throughout our day went from rainy to sunny and back to rainy, but he navigated it well and improvised with a delightful detour when we were unable to make it to one of our stops due to closed roads. This was definitely our favorite part of our honeymoon!

Nice tour! It was low-impact, with a lot of time in the van, but since we had arrived from the US the day before, we weren't in shape to do anything too taxing or time-consuming. This one, at about 8.5 hours, was just right. The driver, Duncan, was entertaining and well informed, and this tour got us into the Highlands, which our main tour did not. Good variety of scenery and history. We had decent weather, which makes all the difference.

This was a wonderful way to see the highlands, lochs and castles!!! Yes, it was a cloudy, drizzly day in Scotland. But...our tour guide Alan was incredible. He had so much knowledge about the history of the area...and an incredible way of imparting that knowledge. He was quiet and let us relax when needed which was a huge plus!!! We got to see the most wonderful things....getting to wander around an ancient castle was so great. I would recommend this tour to everyone. Just be sure to dress accordingly and don't wear good shoes!!! It gets cold and muddy in November!!
I'm looking forward to doing other tours with this group in the future!!!!

My husband and I had a fabulous time on this tour. It is a long day, but such a wonderful way to see Scotland. We were only in Edinburgh for 48 hours and I am so glad we booked a tour otherwise we would have missed so much of what Scotland has to offer outside of the city. The bus is very comfortable, there are ample stops and Peter is an excellent guide, truly providing insight into the history of Scotland while being entertaining and personable. I would definitely book another tour when we return to Scotland!

I am so happy we decided to go on this tour! The castles were amazing! Unfortunately, Kilchurn castle was closed for the winter, but we still got to do a photo stop and see the beautiful exterior. Our tour guide, Peter, was very knowledgeable and made the trip enjoyable. I highly recommend this tour to anyone who loves castles and lochs!

Go on this tour. You will not be disappointed. Our guide Aaron Mohr was fabulous. He was very knowledgeable on all the areas and castles we traveled to. I had one day for a day trip from Edinburgh and I am very glad I picked this one. Stunning scenery. Stately castles. Castle ruins. Lochs and a lake. Quaint Scottish towns. Morning mist. Evening sunset. What's not to love? I highly recommend this tour.

We only had one day to travel outside of Edinburgh and we are really glad that we chose this tour. Gordon, our driver and guide, was fantastic. He was entertaining and educational. There were 15 of us in a comfortable van and we were able to see the highlands, castles and lochs. The scenery was beautiful and overall it was a fantastic day.
