What You Can Expect

West Highland Lochs and Castles Small Group Day Trip from Edinburgh

Kilchurn Castle, Scotland

Your 10-hour tour of Scotland’s Highlands lochs and castles sets off from central Edinburgh in the morning. After meeting your friendly guide and boarding the coach, sit back for the journey from the city through the Lowlands.

Your first stop is at Stirling Castle, former residence of Scottish royals including Mary, Queen of Scots. Snap photos from outside and learn about the site’s colorful history riddled with battles such as the Battle of Stirling Bridge, led by the legendary William Wallace. Then continue to Doune Castle for another unique photo opportunity.
Aside from its historic importance as a critical medieval stronghold, Doune Castle has enjoyed more modern recognition as the film site for Monty Python and The Holy Grail and the TV series Outlanders, based on the books of Diana Gabaldon. Opt to visit the castle (own expense) or snap photos from outside and take a stroll around the surrounding area.
As your coach continues through dense forests and highland peaks, your expert guide will share fascinating true and fictitious tales about local figures like Rob Roy MacGregor — dubbed the ‘Scottish Robin Hood’ — who is buried in the Braes of Balquhidder.
Stop for lunch (own expense) en route to tranquil Loch Awe and the romantic ruins of Kilchurn Castle. Then continue toward Inveraray Castle on the shores of Lake Fyne, where you’ll have free time for an optional castle tour (own expense; tour runs from April to October only). Learn about battles that occurred in this region and rulers like King Robert the Bruce and Clan Campbell, who possessed the Argyll lands for centuries.
The final leg of you tour takes you through the Arrochar Alps and to Loch Lomond. Enjoy epic views of Scotland's largest lake from the charming town of Luss before returning to the capital.
Your full-day excursion ends near Waverly Bridge in the evening.

Overall the day trip was great, Jeff was an excellent host and made us feel quite welcome. He was also a wealth of information relevant to the trip and region. The road to Doune castle was blocked and we had to drive around a long detour but Jeff handled it quite well , making sure to get to all the stops. I would highly recommend this tour.

This trip was a memorable experience! It was a very good combination of beautiful scenery, a travel back in the past of Scottish history, charming castles, nice music and as we were lucky - nice weather too. In about 8 hours of travel we were able to see 4 castles and the lakes the castles are located at plus 2 additional lakes - Loch Lubnaig and Loch Lomond. We used to stop at each sight and we were given time to enjoy it and take pictures, while during the travel, our driver and guide John was telling us about the places we visited, interesting stories of Scottish history for example about William Wallace, Robert the Bruce, about the clans and life in the Highlands...After each legend, he played us a traditional Scottish song singing about the same legend, in the end we finished with bagpipes and some contemporary Scottish music like the one of Amy McDonald. John was an extremely good guide, very professional as well as a very kind and friendly person. Throughout all the hours he didn't get tired of telling us stories of Scotland, it was obvious he did this with passion and love for his country and could make us feel the Scottish spirit too :

I booked for myself and my friend. The tour was just brilliant. Our guide, Paul, was so knowledgeable about everything and so willing to answer questions and have a bit of a laugh with all of us. The tour was on schedule despite some missing people at one stop. The route itself was lengthy without being too tiring or being rushed. We had a really great time and I'm already planning on going on another tour.

You'll not find a finer, more knowledgable, more interesting, passionate, proud, and patriotic guide than James B. Our 10 hour tour seemed like only 2 hours because of his attention to detail, his gregarious and affable manner, his presentation of history facts and lore. As I former high school history teacher in California, I told him to tell his mother that if I were to start up a new school, I would want him on my staff. I don't have a bigger compliment than that.

A lovely day out! We visited many different sites, beautiful castles, castles ruins and lochs. It is definitely a must if you want to know about the Scottish history and especially The Highland and the lochs.

I'm giving this tour a 5 star review because everything we saw was amazing and I would highly recommend everyone to go on this tour. Although I'm giving this tour a 5 star review, I do think there were two problems with the tour however, the two problems aren't large enough to warrant a lower star rating because everything we saw and everywhere we drove was amazing. The first problem was that the tour says it's a small group but in reality it was about 16 people, which is way too large of a group for me to be called a small group. We took another tour in England that was 5 people total which I would call a small group. There was a group of extremely loud and disrespectful people on the tour as well, but that doesn't reflect my value in this tour as I know that's not a representation of that tour. The second problem was I felt like we didn't get too long of a time at each location we stopped at. The tour should have been a 12 hour tour instead of 10 hours to give us more time at each location. Regardless of those two small problems, this really was an amazing tour and we got to see so many amazing things and places. I would highly recommend this tour to everyone if they're looking to see a lot.

A very enjoyable day trip from the city to see some stunning locations and scenery. The location of Kilchurn Castle was the real highlight for me - the scenery there is absolutely incredible. Also enjoyed the history and the guide was great.
