What You Can Expect

Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise from Te Anau

Doubtful Sound Wilderness Cruise from Te Anau

Your Doubtful Sound cruise begins with hotel pickup in Te Anau for the coach journey to Manapouri Lake. After a brief boat ride over the lake’s vivid waters, you’ll board another bus and cross over 2,198-foot-high (670-meter) Wilmot Pass, stopping to view the Fiordland's dense rainforest and alpine moss gardens with a glimpse of Doubtful Sound in the distance.

Continue on to Deep Cove, where you'll board a spacious catamaran for your 3-hour boat tour of Doubtful Sound, part of the World Heritage–listed Fiordland National Park and ten times larger than Milford Sound. Amid this pristine wilderness, whose deep waters are sometimes vivid blue-green and sun-drenched and other times shrouded in mist, you’ll find a rugged landscape of granite peaks and cascading waterfalls.

Soak up views of the dramatic topography as your skipper provides insightful commentary and points out South Island wildlife, such as bottlenose dolphins that frequently swim alongside the vessel. Search for rare Fiordland penguins in their natural habitat and New Zealand fur seals often seen basking on the rocks.

End with the return trip to Manapouri, where you’re transferred back to your Te Anau hotel.

An absolutely brilliant day. One of the highlights of our trip to NZ.
The staff were excellent but it was all about the scenery.
Even fealt quite emotional when they turned all the engines off for a silent 2 minutes

We were a bit concerned when we got to the dock at Manapouri as it was raining and very overcast. It started raining hard and rained for the boat ride and then the bus ride but the bus driver told us how lucky we were to be there when it was raining as there are more and bigger waterfalls. He was right. It stopped raining shortly after we got on the boat for Doubtful Sound and the experience could not have been better. Everyone was very nice and shared a lot of information.

Everything went according to expectations, no complaints. Sadly the weather was not great, but the boat crew still made a good day for us all. The rain made the waterfalls more spectacular, and we were able to go to the mouth of the sound as the sea was fairly calm. I would recommend this as a good value day tour, if I get another opportunity I would try the overnight tour.

The trip is very nice, especially if you are lucky with the weather, but it is very expensive too. I would probably pick the shorter trip to Milford next time, it is cheaper and I guess your pictures will be very similar.

An excellent and smooth tour with everything very well run.

Quite expensive - but worthwhile. Great views over the Wilmot Pass and down into Deep Cove. The trip on the water was excellent. Weather was rather overcast but views were generally clear. When it did become misty with drizzle, the views of the sides of the fiord were just as stunning. Seeing a pod of dolphins by the boat was the icing on the cake. The tour guides were very informative and most helpful.
