What You Can Expect

Taste of Chianti: Tuscan Cheese, Wine and Lunch from Florence

Enjoy the wine that the Chianti has to offer

Leave central Florence, and travel out of the city by air-conditioned 4x4 minibus. Soon, the views of Florence’s travertine buildings and bustling roads are replaced with the lush green hills of Chianti, the famous wine region nestled in the heart of the Tuscan countryside.

Your first stop is at a medieval castle, owned by a local winemaking family for some 900 years. Stretch your legs on a stroll, and hear the story of the estate’s carefully cultivated vines, and of their attention to detail during the winemaking process. Explore the wine cellars and olive oil press, take photos from the castle tower, and, finally, sample up to three glasses of the estate’s different wine varietals as well as two olive oils.

After leaving the castle, relax as you travel through the stunning Chianti countryside to a prestigious cheese producer. Learn about the cheese-making process and taste some delicious locally produced cheese.

Hop back inside your 4x4 minibus and buckle up for an off-road experience, through stretches of Tuscany’s ancient woodland and rolling hills, to your next stop: a traditional Tuscan restaurant. Take a seat and treat your taste buds to some of the finest food that Tuscany has to offer; your lunch is sure to be a highlight of the tour! See the Sample Menu below for examples of the dishes.

Feeling refreshed, continue with a visit to Greve-in-Chianti, a quintessential Tuscan town with pretty streets and quaint shops. Make the most of some free time to explore, enjoy a coffee (own expense) or simply soak up the unique Italian culture that abounds. Then, meet back up with your guide to sample cured meat at a butchers shop.

The rest of your afternoon is spent deep in the Chianti hills at a vineyard that produces Chianti Classico wine. In contrast to the well-established winery visited in the morning, this second winery is smaller and less-known, but it has produced two award-winning varietals. Sample these varietals, and learn how innovation and ancient traditions have combined to make them. Finish with a sweet treat, and then relax on the journey back to Florence where your tour ends.

Sample Menu:

First course:
  • Crostini misti (slices of toasted bread with various toppings)

Second Course:

  • Handmade spaghetti with fresh tomatoes and Pecorino di Fossa (a sheep's cheese aged in caves)
Third course:
  • Mixed grilled meat platter (sausages, spareribs, guinea fowl and chicken) with roast potatoes and garden salad
Two glasses of wine (Chianti Classico and Chianti Classico Riserva) are served with the meal as well as bottled water

Wonderful scenery, excellent wines, superb 4 course lunch and most of all an outstanding guide. Martina our guide really made the day special with her knowledge and enthusiasm of all things Chianti!!

I absolutely loved this tour! Not only did we have a small group that allowed us to get to know each other and interact, but it took us to locations that we would have never found on our own. We had considered renting a car and doing this ourselves, but I'm so glad we booked this tour instead. The tour guide had a lot of insight into the region, the locations and wine itself. I highly recommend it.

Martina was our tour guide for the day and she was awesome! She had a lot of knowledge to share and you can tell she was very enthusiastic and loved her job which definitely makes for a better tour! We learned so much about wine and the views at the estates we visited were amazing. We were served a very generous and delicious portions of lunch and had a total of ten different tastings of wine throughout the day. Definitely check out this tour!

We thoroughly enjoyed this 10-hour winery and Tuscany tour. Francesco was our tour guide and Maximo our driver. Francesco was knowledgeable and willing to answer any questions. It was a great way to see a much of Tuscany countryside without a car with a base in Florence. We visited a beautiful large winery in the morning and a quaint smaller one in the afternoon. also beautiful. Lunch was a delicious feast at a restaurant in the Tuscan hills overlooking the beautiful countryside where we sampled 3 additional wines. We visited Greve in Chianti in the afternoon where we had 40 minutes to tour on our own and then visited a smaller winery before we headed back to Florence. Our only recommendation is that they leave at the stated time instead of waiting for individuals that are running late. We left at 9:15a.m. instead of 9am and the guests did not show up. Perhaps we would have had an additional 15 minutes in Greve had we left on time.

the tour was very well organized. The organizer was very knowledgeable about wines and took us to some prime wineries in Tuscany. The Tuscan lunch with an open view was amazing as well. We tried exotic meats and wines.... which I don't think I would have ordered by myself. I also liked the education on tasting the wine.
I do want to state- that this tour may not be for vegetarians as there is good amount of meat served and little veggie options. I loved it. But, veggies and vegans may want to think about it.
