What You Can Expect

Taste of Chianti: Tuscan Cheese, Wine and Lunch from Florence

Enjoy the wine that the Chianti has to offer

Leave central Florence, and travel out of the city by air-conditioned 4x4 minibus. Soon, the views of Florence’s travertine buildings and bustling roads are replaced with the lush green hills of Chianti, the famous wine region nestled in the heart of the Tuscan countryside.

Your first stop is at a medieval castle, owned by a local winemaking family for some 900 years. Stretch your legs on a stroll, and hear the story of the estate’s carefully cultivated vines, and of their attention to detail during the winemaking process. Explore the wine cellars and olive oil press, take photos from the castle tower, and, finally, sample up to three glasses of the estate’s different wine varietals as well as two olive oils.

After leaving the castle, relax as you travel through the stunning Chianti countryside to a prestigious cheese producer. Learn about the cheese-making process and taste some delicious locally produced cheese.

Hop back inside your 4x4 minibus and buckle up for an off-road experience, through stretches of Tuscany’s ancient woodland and rolling hills, to your next stop: a traditional Tuscan restaurant. Take a seat and treat your taste buds to some of the finest food that Tuscany has to offer; your lunch is sure to be a highlight of the tour! See the Sample Menu below for examples of the dishes.

Feeling refreshed, continue with a visit to Greve-in-Chianti, a quintessential Tuscan town with pretty streets and quaint shops. Make the most of some free time to explore, enjoy a coffee (own expense) or simply soak up the unique Italian culture that abounds. Then, meet back up with your guide to sample cured meat at a butchers shop.

The rest of your afternoon is spent deep in the Chianti hills at a vineyard that produces Chianti Classico wine. In contrast to the well-established winery visited in the morning, this second winery is smaller and less-known, but it has produced two award-winning varietals. Sample these varietals, and learn how innovation and ancient traditions have combined to make them. Finish with a sweet treat, and then relax on the journey back to Florence where your tour ends.

Sample Menu:

First course:
  • Crostini misti (slices of toasted bread with various toppings)

Second Course:

  • Handmade spaghetti with fresh tomatoes and Pecorino di Fossa (a sheep's cheese aged in caves)
Third course:
  • Mixed grilled meat platter (sausages, spareribs, guinea fowl and chicken) with roast potatoes and garden salad
Two glasses of wine (Chianti Classico and Chianti Classico Riserva) are served with the meal as well as bottled water

This tour was done by WalkaboutFlorence and our tour guide was Alex. This was one of the best tours of my trip and Alex was fantastic. He was very knowledgeable and share a wealth of information about the history of Chianti, specifics about the wine region, the wine making process. I also did the Tuscany in One Day tour the day before and I would recommend doing both if you as they do not overlap in any way. The restaurant for lunch had great service along with amazing food and wine. They did not skimp on the food or wine. Alex made this a great tour! Thanks Alex!

Very worthwhile tour. We had an excellent tour guide, Martina, who was extremely knowledgeable, not only about the Tuscan area, but also about winemaking there. We had wonderful wine tastings, delicious sampling of Italian food, a substantial lunch, and great tours of the wineries themselves. Martina shared so much information, on the bus and at each location. A wonderful experience!

This trip was the highlight of our 12 day stay in Italy. We really enjoy the wineries and authentic Italian food, so this was the perfect trip. We met the tour group at the train station in the morning and from there it was completely worry free. The bus driver was excellent and we were able to relax and take in the sites. The first stop was a winery where we witnessed all stages of the wine-making process. We then moved onto a second location, where lunch was served. We ate overlooking the Tuscan hills, the views were breathtaking. The food was excellent too. We then went to the small town of Greve in Chianti. We spent about an hour exploring the town and shops. Then we made our way to the train station. Total time was about 10 hours.

Our tour guide was Alex. He was simply amazing. He was incredibly knowledgeable the entire trip, offered well known information but also interesting stories that I'd never heard of. He was funny and very easy to talk to.

Overall, this trip was amazing. I would recommend to anyone staying in Florence and anyone that likes wine and food!

Excellent tour. We learned and toured some of the most wonderful vineyards in the Tuscan area where Chianti is produced. Our lunch was also a memorable event, with local food and cheese paired with delicious wines. Most of all our tour guide Martina did an superb job. We highly recommend this small group tour arranged through Viator.

Extensive tour through the Chianti region. Alex was excellent, both as a wine and food guide. The tour was long, but I will know Chianti wines for ever!
