What You Can Expect

Taste of Chianti: Tuscan Cheese, Wine and Lunch from Florence

Enjoy the wine that the Chianti has to offer

Leave central Florence, and travel out of the city by air-conditioned 4x4 minibus. Soon, the views of Florence’s travertine buildings and bustling roads are replaced with the lush green hills of Chianti, the famous wine region nestled in the heart of the Tuscan countryside.

Your first stop is at a medieval castle, owned by a local winemaking family for some 900 years. Stretch your legs on a stroll, and hear the story of the estate’s carefully cultivated vines, and of their attention to detail during the winemaking process. Explore the wine cellars and olive oil press, take photos from the castle tower, and, finally, sample up to three glasses of the estate’s different wine varietals as well as two olive oils.

After leaving the castle, relax as you travel through the stunning Chianti countryside to a prestigious cheese producer. Learn about the cheese-making process and taste some delicious locally produced cheese.

Hop back inside your 4x4 minibus and buckle up for an off-road experience, through stretches of Tuscany’s ancient woodland and rolling hills, to your next stop: a traditional Tuscan restaurant. Take a seat and treat your taste buds to some of the finest food that Tuscany has to offer; your lunch is sure to be a highlight of the tour! See the Sample Menu below for examples of the dishes.

Feeling refreshed, continue with a visit to Greve-in-Chianti, a quintessential Tuscan town with pretty streets and quaint shops. Make the most of some free time to explore, enjoy a coffee (own expense) or simply soak up the unique Italian culture that abounds. Then, meet back up with your guide to sample cured meat at a butchers shop.

The rest of your afternoon is spent deep in the Chianti hills at a vineyard that produces Chianti Classico wine. In contrast to the well-established winery visited in the morning, this second winery is smaller and less-known, but it has produced two award-winning varietals. Sample these varietals, and learn how innovation and ancient traditions have combined to make them. Finish with a sweet treat, and then relax on the journey back to Florence where your tour ends.

Sample Menu:

First course:
  • Crostini misti (slices of toasted bread with various toppings)

Second Course:

  • Handmade spaghetti with fresh tomatoes and Pecorino di Fossa (a sheep's cheese aged in caves)
Third course:
  • Mixed grilled meat platter (sausages, spareribs, guinea fowl and chicken) with roast potatoes and garden salad
Two glasses of wine (Chianti Classico and Chianti Classico Riserva) are served with the meal as well as bottled water

Extensive tour through the Chianti region. Alex was excellent, both as a wine and food guide. The tour was long, but I will know Chianti wines for ever!

We highly recommend this tour of Tuscan Hill wineries. Our guide, Alex, was thorough, knowledgeable and engaging. We had a lovely day and made some new friends from all over the world. The group was small and the mini-bus very comfortable. The proprietors were courteous and friendly, never pushing sales but the wine was delicious and many purchases were made. Alex was a wealth of information and encouraged questions.

Fantastic tour! I highly recommend this especially if Stefan is your guide. We had a great day with Stefan a sommelier who was very knowledgeable about the wines of the region. The tastings were great. We even shipped a case of wine home and it arrived just days after we returned from the trip. The lunch is delicious - but huge! You can definitely skip breakfast because the 3 course lunch served at a lovely restaurant overlooking a Tuscan valley is outstanding. I highly recommend this tour especially if you are looking for a way to escape the crowds of the Florence streets and museums. It is lovely to be out in the country with a small group enjoying good wine, good food, and a beautiful setting. Not one person tried to sell us a selfie stick all day!!

We absolutely LOVED this tour! We had such a great time at each winery, and the lunch at the cute Tuscan Villa was incredible. Our tour guide, Franchesco, was so knowledgable and made the day so special. We ended the day with full bellies and full hearts.

We HIGHLY recommend this tour.

High quality tour. Our guide Alex was great. A small group size of about 20 persons which was great. Allowed us to mingle with other travellers. Wineries selected were very and good and the lunch provided at a beautiful restaurant was a lavish spread and superb!
Not to mention that the wines that we tasted through the day were excellent.
Great value for money!

The trip was fantastic! Absolutely stunning and Alex was a terrific guide with Francesco driving and navigating the winding road through the country side and getting us back on time. The lunch was superb! Highly recommend this trip, much better than hiring a car as you can just sit back, relax, enjoy the wine and scenery.
