What You Can Expect

Taste of Chianti: Tuscan Cheese, Wine and Lunch from Florence

Enjoy the wine that the Chianti has to offer

Leave central Florence, and travel out of the city by air-conditioned 4x4 minibus. Soon, the views of Florence’s travertine buildings and bustling roads are replaced with the lush green hills of Chianti, the famous wine region nestled in the heart of the Tuscan countryside.

Your first stop is at a medieval castle, owned by a local winemaking family for some 900 years. Stretch your legs on a stroll, and hear the story of the estate’s carefully cultivated vines, and of their attention to detail during the winemaking process. Explore the wine cellars and olive oil press, take photos from the castle tower, and, finally, sample up to three glasses of the estate’s different wine varietals as well as two olive oils.

After leaving the castle, relax as you travel through the stunning Chianti countryside to a prestigious cheese producer. Learn about the cheese-making process and taste some delicious locally produced cheese.

Hop back inside your 4x4 minibus and buckle up for an off-road experience, through stretches of Tuscany’s ancient woodland and rolling hills, to your next stop: a traditional Tuscan restaurant. Take a seat and treat your taste buds to some of the finest food that Tuscany has to offer; your lunch is sure to be a highlight of the tour! See the Sample Menu below for examples of the dishes.

Feeling refreshed, continue with a visit to Greve-in-Chianti, a quintessential Tuscan town with pretty streets and quaint shops. Make the most of some free time to explore, enjoy a coffee (own expense) or simply soak up the unique Italian culture that abounds. Then, meet back up with your guide to sample cured meat at a butchers shop.

The rest of your afternoon is spent deep in the Chianti hills at a vineyard that produces Chianti Classico wine. In contrast to the well-established winery visited in the morning, this second winery is smaller and less-known, but it has produced two award-winning varietals. Sample these varietals, and learn how innovation and ancient traditions have combined to make them. Finish with a sweet treat, and then relax on the journey back to Florence where your tour ends.

Sample Menu:

First course:
  • Crostini misti (slices of toasted bread with various toppings)

Second Course:

  • Handmade spaghetti with fresh tomatoes and Pecorino di Fossa (a sheep's cheese aged in caves)
Third course:
  • Mixed grilled meat platter (sausages, spareribs, guinea fowl and chicken) with roast potatoes and garden salad
Two glasses of wine (Chianti Classico and Chianti Classico Riserva) are served with the meal as well as bottled water

Francesco, was a great guide. We enjoyed every aspect of this tour. The wine tasting was excellent, both locations were beautiful. We were 8 people on the bus plus the driver and guide. It was very intimate and we got to meet and get to know some wonderful people. I highly recommend this tour.

Can I give this ten stars? This tour was amazing. The tour guide was exceptionally knowledgable without being intimidating ... and he was fun! Fantastic bus driver who navigated the steep and winding Tuscan hills. The wineries were beautiful and romantic settings. Having lived in northern California, I can say that the Tuscan vineyards are like Napa on steroids! So lush and gorgeous. The wines and there were many we tasted were amazing in flavor and intensity the food was impeccable and the small company was so collegial. This was truly magical.

WOW WOW WOW - what a completely amazing day from start to finish. The vineyards we visited were out of this world, with the most amazing Italian wine I have ever tasted. The cheese and meats were divine. The first vineyard for me was the best, the table set impeccably with beautiful glasses and information regarding the wine. Valeria our tour guide was AMAZING !! She took us through every part of the wine process and made the day fun. The lunch was delicious - Guinea fowl, Rooster etc....it was a hot day of 35 degrees but every part of the day was a new taste and way of tasting the best food that the Chianti region had to offer. I would recommend this tour with 100.

This was a wonderful day, but I want to point out that the description in Viator did not match exactly what we did. We did not go to a cheese place or a butcher for sausage. We did have cheese and sausage with the tastings. Lunch was lovely but I think it should have included dessert. I love the 3 wineries we went to. Our guide was great...full of knowledge.

Better known as the Walkabout Wine Safari and called that because of the exciting ride in the bus up and down steep and winding dirt track road in the Chianti region. Not for the faint of heart but those who dare will enjoy a mouthwatering array of Chianti Classico wines as well as some Super Tuscan's accompanied by a variety of salami, breads and olive oils. On our trip Stephano narrated our progress with passion and typical tuscan flair..not to be missed.
