What You Can Expect

Taste of Chianti: Tuscan Cheese, Wine and Lunch from Florence

Enjoy the wine that the Chianti has to offer

Leave central Florence, and travel out of the city by air-conditioned 4x4 minibus. Soon, the views of Florence’s travertine buildings and bustling roads are replaced with the lush green hills of Chianti, the famous wine region nestled in the heart of the Tuscan countryside.

Your first stop is at a medieval castle, owned by a local winemaking family for some 900 years. Stretch your legs on a stroll, and hear the story of the estate’s carefully cultivated vines, and of their attention to detail during the winemaking process. Explore the wine cellars and olive oil press, take photos from the castle tower, and, finally, sample up to three glasses of the estate’s different wine varietals as well as two olive oils.

After leaving the castle, relax as you travel through the stunning Chianti countryside to a prestigious cheese producer. Learn about the cheese-making process and taste some delicious locally produced cheese.

Hop back inside your 4x4 minibus and buckle up for an off-road experience, through stretches of Tuscany’s ancient woodland and rolling hills, to your next stop: a traditional Tuscan restaurant. Take a seat and treat your taste buds to some of the finest food that Tuscany has to offer; your lunch is sure to be a highlight of the tour! See the Sample Menu below for examples of the dishes.

Feeling refreshed, continue with a visit to Greve-in-Chianti, a quintessential Tuscan town with pretty streets and quaint shops. Make the most of some free time to explore, enjoy a coffee (own expense) or simply soak up the unique Italian culture that abounds. Then, meet back up with your guide to sample cured meat at a butchers shop.

The rest of your afternoon is spent deep in the Chianti hills at a vineyard that produces Chianti Classico wine. In contrast to the well-established winery visited in the morning, this second winery is smaller and less-known, but it has produced two award-winning varietals. Sample these varietals, and learn how innovation and ancient traditions have combined to make them. Finish with a sweet treat, and then relax on the journey back to Florence where your tour ends.

Sample Menu:

First course:
  • Crostini misti (slices of toasted bread with various toppings)

Second Course:

  • Handmade spaghetti with fresh tomatoes and Pecorino di Fossa (a sheep's cheese aged in caves)
Third course:
  • Mixed grilled meat platter (sausages, spareribs, guinea fowl and chicken) with roast potatoes and garden salad
Two glasses of wine (Chianti Classico and Chianti Classico Riserva) are served with the meal as well as bottled water

The tour was one of the high lights of my 5 weeks in Italy. Martina was a wonderful guide, informative and with a wonderful sense of humor. The estates visited were beautiful, Cinciano was my favorite! Lunch was excellent and served with alot of laughter. The group was small and we felt like a family long before the day was over. The experience of getting into Chianti counrty and small back roads takes away the feeling of being a "tourist". I have already made my reservations for the apartment in Fflorence for next fall and as I get closer to the date will book for the cooking class. In summery:
Tour-Excellent
Transportation-very comfortable and Fabio is a great driver
Locations visited - beautiful and well planned
Guide- Martina was fantastic!!!

In October, my boyfriend and I visited 6 cities/4 countries in Europe and out of all those days, this was our favorite day. We almost didn't book this tour because we were only going to be in Florence for 3 days, but we ended up taking our chances and we are so happy we did. The tour is absolutely worth every penny. We learned so much about Chianti wine, the cheese, olive oil, the customs and traditions, and so much history. The wines, cheese, olive oil and lunch were absolutely delicious. And it was lovely getting to know the other individuals on this tour. What made this experience complete was Lucca, our tour guide. He was both knowledgeable, charismatic, and very funny. The driver was also very nice and we enjoyed getting to know both of them. I highly recommend this tour.
