What You Can Expect

Taste of Chianti: Tuscan Cheese, Wine and Lunch from Florence

Enjoy the wine that the Chianti has to offer

Leave central Florence, and travel out of the city by air-conditioned 4x4 minibus. Soon, the views of Florence’s travertine buildings and bustling roads are replaced with the lush green hills of Chianti, the famous wine region nestled in the heart of the Tuscan countryside.

Your first stop is at a medieval castle, owned by a local winemaking family for some 900 years. Stretch your legs on a stroll, and hear the story of the estate’s carefully cultivated vines, and of their attention to detail during the winemaking process. Explore the wine cellars and olive oil press, take photos from the castle tower, and, finally, sample up to three glasses of the estate’s different wine varietals as well as two olive oils.

After leaving the castle, relax as you travel through the stunning Chianti countryside to a prestigious cheese producer. Learn about the cheese-making process and taste some delicious locally produced cheese.

Hop back inside your 4x4 minibus and buckle up for an off-road experience, through stretches of Tuscany’s ancient woodland and rolling hills, to your next stop: a traditional Tuscan restaurant. Take a seat and treat your taste buds to some of the finest food that Tuscany has to offer; your lunch is sure to be a highlight of the tour! See the Sample Menu below for examples of the dishes.

Feeling refreshed, continue with a visit to Greve-in-Chianti, a quintessential Tuscan town with pretty streets and quaint shops. Make the most of some free time to explore, enjoy a coffee (own expense) or simply soak up the unique Italian culture that abounds. Then, meet back up with your guide to sample cured meat at a butchers shop.

The rest of your afternoon is spent deep in the Chianti hills at a vineyard that produces Chianti Classico wine. In contrast to the well-established winery visited in the morning, this second winery is smaller and less-known, but it has produced two award-winning varietals. Sample these varietals, and learn how innovation and ancient traditions have combined to make them. Finish with a sweet treat, and then relax on the journey back to Florence where your tour ends.

Sample Menu:

First course:
  • Crostini misti (slices of toasted bread with various toppings)

Second Course:

  • Handmade spaghetti with fresh tomatoes and Pecorino di Fossa (a sheep's cheese aged in caves)
Third course:
  • Mixed grilled meat platter (sausages, spareribs, guinea fowl and chicken) with roast potatoes and garden salad
Two glasses of wine (Chianti Classico and Chianti Classico Riserva) are served with the meal as well as bottled water

Better known as the Walkabout Wine Safari and called that because of the exciting ride in the bus up and down steep and winding dirt track road in the Chianti region. Not for the faint of heart but those who dare will enjoy a mouthwatering array of Chianti Classico wines as well as some Super Tuscan's accompanied by a variety of salami, breads and olive oils. On our trip Stephano narrated our progress with passion and typical tuscan flair..not to be missed.

This was the greatest thing we did while we are in Italy. I would like to give 10 to tour guide Martina and the bus driver. Martina really I mean really loves her job and she is a professional about the history and wine.
I highly recommend everyone who does not mind 10 hours journey and walking standing a lot of hours.
When we were back to Florence after the tour we were exhausted and ate and slept.
This is not good for people who has walking and standing issues.
Again THANK YOU SO MUCH MARTINA.!!!

It was raining as we left Florence, so I didn't hold out high hopes for this tour. Irrespective of the rain, this tour was amazing! Lots of wine 9 tastings, 1 white and 8 reds. Four stops - 3 wine tastings. Beautiful countryside and boutique wineries. Val was very passionate about the wine and gave some great insights. The cheese and meat tastings that accompanied the wine were superb as was lunch. In fact, lunch was one of the best meals we had in Italy - very good quality, no fuss regional cooking and plenty of food.

This tour was exceptional. I highly recommend it.

This was a great tour! We were able to sample many wines 9 total on the tour and our tour guide, Valeria, was very knowledgeable and enthusiastic. Lunch included three wine tastings and A LOT of food. The pasta they served was some of the best we had while in Italy. Also, the views were breathtaking. This trip is definitely worth doing if you like wine, food and want to explore the Tuscan countryside!
