Lantau Island and Giant Buddha Day Trip from Hong Kong

Lantau Island and Giant Buddha Day Trip from Hong Kong

Your day trip from Hong Kong begins with a trip on an express ferry across Hong Kong's harbor to Lantau Island. You'll then board a coach to beautiful Cheung Sha Beach, Hong Kong's longest beach. Next it's on to the unique Tai O fishing village, where the local fishermen's homes are built on stilts.

Your coach will take you up a winding mountain road to Ngong Ping Plateau, where the Giant Buddha sits majestically, close to the Po Lin (Precious Lotus) Monastery. More than 111 feet (34 meters) high, Hong Kong's amazingly big Buddha is the world's largest, seated, outdoor bronze Buddha.

You'll have ample time to enjoy a guided tour of the colorful Po Lin Monastery and the Giant Buddha Exhibition Hall. A short walk away is the Wisdom Path where an ancient prayer is inscribed on a series of wooden columns set in a figure of eight to signify infinity. You'll be served a traditional Buddhist vegetarian meal at the monastery, followed by an optional visit to the culturally themed Ngong Ping Village.

Your tour concludes with a cable-car ride down the mountain. This 25-minute journey offers breathtaking panoramic views of the South China Sea, the lush mountains and valleys and the awe-inspiring Giant Buddha statue. From Tung Chung Village return to Kowloon or Hong Kong Island by coach.

Please note: This tour is NOT recommended for elderly or disabled passengers due to restricted access on and off the ferry boat and Ngong Ping cable car.

Important update: Please note that on the dates March 13-30, 2013, the Ngong Ping cable car will be temporarily suspended. On these dates, you will instead be taken by coach from Ngong Ping Village to Tung Chung and onto your hotel.

This tour which is run by a local tour company, Lantau Tours, was really excellent. Ryan, our guide, is a Lantau native and has a real passion for his island. The narrative was both informative and, at times hilarious, Ryan really is entertaining and knowledgable. The tour starts with a relaxing ferry trip to one end of Lantau then a bus drive to a beachside pit stop then on to one of the few remaining traditional fishing villages. This stop included a short boat ride through the village, this was particularly poingnant as we passed some of the stilt houses that had burnt down only a couple of nights before. Back on the bus and a very scenic drive over the island to the Giant Buddha. Instead of walking up to the Buddha the bus dropped the group off at the top allowing for a more leisurely walk down to the Ning Ping Monastery for lunch (Ryan even organised for the bus to wait at the top car park to drive one passenger with a baby and another two with mobility problems back down after touring the Buddha, since he considered the walk down too difficult). The vegetarian lunch was delicious and very filling. The final highlight of the tour was the cable car ride down from the Giant Buddha site to North Lantau. This was fantastic, the ride is about 5 kms long up and down over peaks and valleys with a fantastic view of the new Hong Kong airport at the end. This is a great tour, Ryan is a wonderful guide and made the trip a highlight of my Hong Kong holiday.
