Start with a bicycle tour, following your guide past peaceful streams and verdant rice paddies until you arrive at the small village of Thanh Toan – home to a legendary market.

Climb off your bike and stroll among the market stalls, taking in the sights as you chat with the locals and learn about life in this little-known corner of Vietnam. Observe artisans making colorful rice paste figurines and selling palm-leafed conical hats. Discover local specialties such as glutinous rice crepes, rice dumplings, sweetened porridge and a variety of delicious fruits and cakes.

Learn more about the role of agriculture in local society with a guided visit to the Thanh Toan Agricultural Museum. Afterward, spend some time exploring the small town on foot, stopping by the beautiful Thanh Toan covered bridge or simply soaking up the atmosphere while sipping Vietnamese coffee at the village café.

Then, hop back on your bicycle and continue exploring the region with your guide and small group, riding over small streams and through picturesque villages as you stop to chat with local fisherman and duck farmers going about their daily lives. Stop at a nearby school to meet the friendly kindergarteners and then pay a short visit to a farmer’s home for an introduction to the art of making rice wine.

5 star rating: Highly Recommended December 2013

This was a great tour and one of hour highlights while in Vietnam. We got out of the city and into villages that rarely see tourists. Everyone young and old would shout “Hello!” when we pedaled by. We got to see how they live while riding along waterways and past the rice fields. We stopped at a museum to learn about rice cultivation and see the tools used back in the old days (some of which are still used today). We crossed a beautiful bridge to explore the local market and met Dieu, the cutest little lady you’ll ever meet. She sits on the bridge waiting to tell you your fortune for $1. Definitely stop. Our guide Nghi was fantastic and we learned a lot about the area. It is a well paced tour and highly recommended. Note that helmets are not provided.
