Tours, sightseeing tours, activities & things to do | Viator.comViking and Medieval Dublin Walking Tour
Start this enchanting walk from the Tourist Office, once the site of the old Viking parliament. Traipse through narrow lane ways until you reach the Georgian styled City Hall and the courtyards of historic Dublin Castle. Mostly an 18th century complex, discover medieval remains and the gardens before walking along a section of the Norman city walls. View the remains of an ancient church on your way to the west end of Temple Bar, the site of Dublin's origins.
Explore hidden streets and passageways lined with a contrast of period buildings and the more modern city. Amongst the ruins of archaeological discoveries, an underground medieval tower reveals an intriguing connection with a Wagnerian opera. By the River Liffey, observe where Norse longboats sailed up over 1,000 years ago to capture the early Christian village of Dublin. It was here they went on to build what was to become one of the most important trading towns in the Viking world.
Follow in George Frederick Handel's footsteps and see the site where his Messiah was first performed under the shadow of the ancient Christ Church Cathedral. Along the stretch of Viking/Norman view the city wall still standing in isolation. Enter the ancient gateway up to a church founded by the Normans in 1190. Before your tour comes to an end, find out why Dublin has two cathedrals of the same faith and why the tower of Christ Church Cathedral contains a world record.
Afterwards, you may choose to visit Dublinia, the Viking and Medieval museum or Christ Church Cathedral with its atmospheric crypt. Alternatively check out St Audoen's, the city's oldest parish church and still used today. Many cafes and traditional bars also await you including the Brazen Head, Ireland's oldest pub.
