What You Can Expect

4-Night 'ANZAC Day' Experience in Gallipoli and Istanbul

Experience the 2014 ANZAC Dawn Service in Gallipoli

ANZAC Day marks the date when Australian and New Zealand forces landed at Gallipoli – the peninsula on the European side of Turkey – with the aim of capturing Constantinople (now Istanbul) toward the end of WWI. The troops were met with a resistance, far fiercer than expected, from the Ottoman Turks and the battle dragged on for more than half a year, claiming thousands of lives.

The bloodshed had a profound impact on Australia and New Zealand, and the date of the invasion has since been marked as one of the countries’ most important national occasions.

Your 4-night tour includes accommodation in Istanbul around ANZAC Day, and includes excursions to the Gallipoli battlefields on Days 3 and 4 to see the memorials and attend the services that take place. A full-day city highlights tour of Istanbul is also included, so you’ll get to know the country’s cultural capital while in town.

Day 1: Istanbul Airport – Istanbul
Meet your driver at Istanbul Atatürk Airport or Sabiha Gokcen Airport (please advise at time of booking) and travel to your hotel in the center of town. On arrival, the rest of the day is yours to spend at leisure; perhaps visit Istanbul’s Ottoman mosques and Byzantine churches, or experience the frenzy of its world-famous souqs. Meet your guide in the evening to find out the full itinerary for the next few days.

Overnight: 4-star Orka Royal Hotel

Day 2: Istanbul Old Town (B)
After breakfast, set off for a full-day tour of Istanbul by coach, taking in the city highlights around Sultanahmet – Istanbul's Old Town. First stop is the Blue Mosque, an elaborate place of worship with six skyline-dominating minarets. Explore its ornate interior with your guide and marvel at the ceiling, consisting almost entirely of distinctive blue tiles – hence the mosque’s name. Continue to Hagia Sophia, one of Istanbul’s best-known monuments-come-museums, and stroll around, admiring its impressive Ottoman-era mosaics and artifacts.

After a break for lunch (own expense) continue to Istanbul Archeology Museum (Arkeoloji Müzesi). Housed within Topkapi Palace, arguably the most important museum in Turkey, the archeology museum showcases nearly a million artifacts and relics, including sarcophagi that date back to the 4th century. After browsing the exhibits, head back outside for photos by Istanbul Hippodrome, where chariot races were held during the days of the Ottoman Empire.

Your tour finishes in the Old Town, leaving you well placed to continue sightseeing independently, if you wish. An optional trip to a Turkish folklore concert takes place in town in the evening (own expense).

Overnight: 4-star Orka Royal Hotel

Day 3: Istanbul – Gallipoli – ANZAC Cove (B, L)
Leave your hotel at 7am and travel west to the southern tip of Gallipoli peninsula for the International Service at the Turkish Memorial – Mehmetcik Abide. Typically, the poignant remembrance service includes speeches by New Zealand dignitaries who focus on lessons learned from the WWI tragedy. After the service finishes, travel to nearby Cape Helles to attend the Commonwealth Service at the British Memorial.

Enjoy a break for a BBQ lunch in the sun. Spend the rest of your afternoon at leisure at Anzac Cove, where the most significant Gallipoli battles took place. Settle down into your camp at the ANZAC Cove and enjoy dinner from one of the many buffets on the camp (own expense)

Overnight: Camping at the ANZAC Cove

Day 4: ANZAC Day; Gallipoli – Istanbul (B)
Rise before sunrise for the famous ANZAC Dawn Service. Walk from Beach Cemetery to the ANZAC Commemorative Site, and join in with the silence, held as a mark of respect to the fallen service men. After the service finishes, attend the Australian and/or New Zealand memorial service before your afternoon ride back to Istanbul. No additional activities or excursions are planned in the evening, leaving you free to commemorate the evening of ANZAC Day as you see fit.

Overnight: 4-star Orka Royal Hotel

Day 5: Istanbul (B)
Say goodbye to new-found friends after breakfast, and then check out of your hotel, finishing your 4-night tour.
