Hector Peterson Memorial in Soweto
Soweto is the most metropolitan township in the country - setting trends in politics, fashion, music, dance and language. Drive past two former Nobel Prize winners’ previous residence. See the Hector Peterson memorial; dedicated to one of the first casualties of the Soweto uprising of June 16, 1976, when over 500 people were killed and the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital, the largest hospital in the world.
Johannesburg (afternoon)
Onboard your air-conditioned coach, pass the historical buildings of downtown Johannesburg that dominate this bustling city. Your guide will point out the must-see Hillbrown Tower that juts out over the city skyscape, as well as the iconic Post Office Tower.
Stop outside Africa’s tallest skyscraper, the Carlton Centre, and walk up to the 50th floor observation deck with your guide to see panoramic, sweeping views over Johannesburg. After walking around the viewing platform at leisure, hop back onboard your coach to continue seeing the sights.
Head on to Constitution Hill next, passing by the Supreme Court and the famous Nelson Mandela Bridge in Newtown – said to symbolize Mandela’s role in bridging the apartheid divide. As you drive around Constitution Hill, your guide will explain some of the fascinating history that this National Heritage site has witnessed throughout the years. Learn about South Africa’s turbulent past and its slow yet steady transition to democracy.
Pass the new constitutional court and the historic site of Johannesburg’s Old Fort Prison Complex, where Nelson Mandela was famously the only black prisoner to be held here. Your tour winds back through the affluent neighborhood of Houghton, passing lavish homes and leafy streets.
Time permitting; there will be a final stop at the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens at Emmerentia Dam. You’ll enjoy some time at leisure here to explore this beautiful city park with its African herb garden and tranquil lawns.

This tour was so much more than expected. The guide and driver were extremely knowledgeable about the history of the area and the present day Jo'burg and Soweto, We saw many, many things that we would never have seen unguided, and we felt in very safe hands at all times.

Truly excellent. The guide was superb. Liliesleaf was truly moving and educational - glad this was substituted for the Apartheid museum. A stop at Mandela's house and at the Hector Peterson memorial would have been nice.
