What You Can Expect

2 Nights in Krakow with Guided Half-Day Tour of Auschwitz-Birkenau or Wieliczka Salt Mine

Choose to visit haunting Auschwitz-Birkenau on an included half-day tour

Your 2-night independent tour gives you plenty of freedom to experience the charms of Krakow. Poland’s royal capital for 500 years, this treasure chest of Gothic and Renaissance architecture is regarded as the crown jewel of Polish cities.

Create your own itinerary on this 2-night experience, which mixes both guided and independent explorations. On Day 1, make use of a 24-hour ticket for the city’s hop-on, hop-off bus tour to see its top attractions with audio commentary. Then, on Day 2, choose from two half-day tours, visiting either the poignant Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camps or Wieliczka Salt Mine, both outside the city. Both options include round-trip transfers, entrance fees and a guided tour.

Your Krakow experience also includes two nights’ accommodation at a 3-star or 4-star centrally located hotel, plus round-trip airport transfers. Breakfasts at your hotel are also included, but other meals and drinks, and additional activities, are all at your own expense.

Itinerary

Day 1: Krakow
Start your 2-night Krakow experience with a transfer from John Paul II International Krakow-Balice airport to your 3-star or 4-star hotel in the city center. Check in and spend the rest of the day as you please. Since your day depends on what time you arrive from the airport, no fully guided activities are offered on this day.

But that doesn't mean you can't kick off the sightseeing! One great way to explore is with your 24-hour ticket for Krakow’s hop-on, hop-off sightseeing bus. Get out at any of the 13 stops on the route to explore star attractions such as Wawel Castle, Main Market Square, the Jewish quarter and Schindler’s Factory for as long as you like.

As you travel, listen to the audio commentary charting the city's history and its landmarks. Learn about Krakow during World War II and discover its religious importance to Poles such as the late Pope John Paul II.

In the evening venture out to experience Krakow’s vibrant nightlife. Enjoy dinner at any of its welcoming restaurants and perhaps finish your night at one of the Old Town’s lively bars. All drinks, meals and activities are at your own expense.

Overnight: 3-star or 4-star in central Krakow

Day 2: Krakow (B)
Cast your sightseeing net wider today on your chosen half-day tour to Auschwitz-Birkenau or Wieliczka Salt Mine (see tour descriptions below). After breakfast at your hotel, board your comfortable minivan and head out on your tour with a local guide.

Auschwitz-Birkenau Half-Day Tour
Soak up the views of Poland’s countryside on your 1.5-hour journey to the poignant Auschwitz-Birkenau complex, UNESCO World Heritage site.

Take a guided tour of the camps where approximately 1.5 million people, most of them European Jews, died between 1940 and 1945.
Visit Auschwitz I to see its partially destroyed buildings and the sobering exhibitions in its surviving prison blocks, gas chamber and crematorium. Then, visit the now mostly destroyed Birkenau (Auschwitz II) to witness the chilling scale of its barracks and gas chambers.

After your Auschwitz-Birkenau tour finishes, return to Krakow with a drop-off at your hotel.

Wieliczka Salt Mine Half-Day Trip
Sit back and relax as you make the 30-minute journey to the UNESCO-listed Wieliczka Salt Mine, a 186-mile (300-kilometer) labyrinth of underground chambers sculpted from solid salt.

Led by your guide, explore the hand-hewn tunnels and hear about their renowned curative properties. See the underground lake, visit the museum and admire the ornate chapels and sculptures carved into the mine. Marvel, too, at the showpiece Chapel of St Kinga: an underground church complete with chandeliers and altars sculpted from salt.

After your Wieliczka Salt Mine tour finishes, return to Krakow and enjoy a hotel drop-off.

Back at your hotel, spend the rest of the day at your leisure. In the evening perhaps visit a restaurant or cozy pub for dinner or attend one of Krakow’s many concerts or exhibitions for a fitting finale to your city experience. All food, drinks and activities are at your own expense.

Overnight: 3-star or 4-star in central Krakow

Day 3: Krakow (B)
Check out of your hotel after breakfast and enjoy a convenient transfer to John Paul II International Krakow-Balice airport.
