Private Tour of Ancient Lima Huacas

Explore pre-Incan ruins dating back to 200 BC right in downtown Lima! Long before stones were laid down to build Machu Picchu, the indigenous people of what is now Peru were constructing huacas (pyramid-like structures) for ceremonial purposes. Lima was constructed around these huacas, which means you won't have to travel far to see them! Your local guide will take you to two sites, Huaca Pucllana and Huaca Huallamarca, and provide historical insight into these temples that were built by the unknown 'Lima culture,’ an indigenous pre-Incan civilization.

  • Guided tour of ancient Huaca Pucllana and Huaca Huallamarca
  • Learn of the 'Lima culture,' an indigenous civilization that lived in Peru from 100 A.D. to 650 A.D.
  • Private tour providing a personalized experience

Private Tour of Ancient Lima Huacas

Huaca Pucllana

Erupting out of the busy metropolitan city of Lima, Peru, Huaca Pucllana and Huaca Huallamarca are two of several ancient huacas that dot the cityscape. These huacas have avoided urban sprawl, reminding Peruvians of their heritage every day. Let your guide escort you from your hotel on a narrated exploration of these pyramid-like structures that date back to 200 BC.

Climb to the top of Huaca Pucllana for a stunning view of Lima, or grab a snack at the ruin’s restaurant, which boasts amazing views of the temple from almost every seat. Constructed around 500 AD, Huaca Pucllana still undergoes excavation, with archaeologists uncovering artifacts and unearthing grave sites regularly.

At Huaca Huallamarca, an oracle center in operation for 1,200 years until the Spanish Conquest, you can dive into the rich history at the ruin’s museum. In the 1950s, dozens of well-preserved mummies were excavated, and some are now on display in the museum.

Upon completion of the tour, you’ll have a better understanding of the unknown 'Lima culture' civilization that helped shape present-day Lima.

Guide was wonderful. Huacas were very interesting.

Great tour. Only complaint is that we had 10 people on same tour and they separated us into 3 groups and we would have preferred to be together. I told the representative the night before tour the 10 people were together even though they were booked on different dates. I confirmed all 10 people on same call. We all thought tour was great, perhaps a bit pricey for the product.

3 star rating: Worth doing July 2013

We enjoyed this tour as it was our first in Lima. Our guide, Marybel, was very informative about the Huacas and the surrounding area. We enjoyed a couple of extra places that we didn't expect, like the Kissing Park. And the driver was willing to drop us off at Larcomar where we could spend the afternoon, have lunch and walk back to our hotel.
