Board your vehicle with your local guide, and leave Lisbon behind as you cross the Tagus River on the Vasco da Gama Bridge. Built for the 1998 Lisbon Universal Exposition, it is the longest bridge in Europe at nearly 11 miles (17 km) long! Arrive in Setubal, 18 miles (30 km) south of Lisbon, and visit Setubal Castle, surrounded by a 16th-century fortress. Enjoy views of the Tróia Peninsula, the city of Setubal and beautiful sandy beaches. Follow your guide around Setubal’s market, one of the best fish markets in the region, and admire the market’s colorful tile decoration adorned with old-fashioned images of Setubal fishermen at work.
Continue to Arrabida Natural Park and admire picturesque views of the Atlantic as you drive up the mountains to the highest peak at 1,640 feet (500 meters). Then return to sea level at the peaceful Portinho da Arrabida Beach. Relax or go for a swim (weather permitting) during some free time.
Take a break for lunch (own expense) at the fishing village of Sesimbra, famous for its delicious fresh seafood. You can also visit the village’s local beaches or go for a walk around town.
Next, follow your guide to a wine tasting session at Casa Museu Jose Maria da Fonseca, one of the oldest wine-producers in Portugal. Enjoy a guided tour of the winery and sample two wines (included) from a wide selection of regional wines. Here, you can also try the traditional regional sweet torta de azeitão (small tartlet made from flour, eggs and sugar).
Then make your way through the Palmela wine region, passing vineyards, cork trees and windmills, and drive up the hill to the 8th-century Palmela Castle and Palmela Inn (Pousada de Palmela), where you can enjoy incredible panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and Arrabida Natural Park.
Finally, visit the Cristo Rei Sanctuary, inaugurated in 1959 and inspired by the famous Cristo Rei monument in Brazil, and admire Lisbon from a distance before returning to the city.
