Stop for a coffee before returning to the coach for your journey into the timeless countryside of Dorsetshire. This is true back-roads country, where you'll believe time has stood still amid the villages and harbors of the region.
This journey takes you along the stunning Jurassic Coast, a UNESCO World Heritage Site famed for its geology and fossil finds. Explore Jane Austen’s Lyme Regis, where she based parts of her novel Persuasion and which was also the setting for John Fowles’ The French Lieutenant's Woman. Wander along the 18th-century promenade, its famous Cobb and ancient harbor that continue to inspire writers and artists.
Day Two (B,D):
Explore the region known as the ‘English Riviera’ – covering 22 miles (35 km) of coastline, where you can enjoy unique geology and spectacular views. This is Agatha Christie country and the setting for many of her famous crimes. Travel through the Victorian seaside towns and fishing villages along the coast.
In the afternoon, stop in one of these villages for a traditional Devonshire clotted cream tea (included)! Next, travel through Dartmoor National Park. Get your cameras ready as you meander along beautiful country lanes, over ancient stone bridges and through the dramatic rolling countryside where wild ponies roam.
Day Three (B):
As you make your way back to London, there are still several interesting sights in store. Your first highlight of the day is the mystical town of Glastonbury, home to an abbey where King Arthur and Guinevere are reputedly buried. Glastonbury is also the New Age capital of England with an eclectic collection of shops.
Next, stop by the attractive market city of Wells, known for its ornate cathedral and Vicar’s Close (the oldest continuously inhabited medieval street in Europe).
