Itinerary:
Things to See and Do at the Tower of London:
The Crown Jewels:
The Tower of London has been home to the Crown Jewels since the 14th century and the Jewel House is an essential part of any visit to the Tower today. Marvel at some of the world's largest and most historic diamonds set in the regalia used to crown the sovereigns of England
The White Tower:
Begun in the reign of William the Conqueror (1066-87), the White Tower marks the start of the Tower of London's history as both a palace and a fortress. Today it houses displays from the Royal Armouries' collection, which includes the armour of Henry VIII and the historic instruments of torture.
Crowns and Diamonds:
The Martin Tower houses a special exhibition Crowns and Diamonds: the making of the Crown Jewels, which explains the evolution of British crowns and the role that diamonds played in their decoration. Included in the display are five royal crowns, and over 12,000 diamonds.
Traitors' Gate:
The gate beneath St Thomas's Tower provided access to the Tower from the River Thames. In time it became known as Traitors' Gate because of the number of prisoners accused of treason who are supposed to have passed through it. For some, the trip was to be their last.
The Medieval Palace:
The Medieval Palace gives visitors an opportunity to see the part of the Tower of London that was generally used by the kings of England when in residence. Exhibitions and reconstructed interiors give a sense of royal residential life in the reign of Edward I (1272-1397).
Scaffold Site and Tower Green:
Some of the Tower's most famous and important prisoners were held in the buildings around Tower Green and seven were executed here - including three English queens. The Chapel of St Peter ad Vincula is the final resting place of those who died here. A memorial to those who perished now marks the site.
The Bloody Tower:
The Bloody Tower is traditionally believed to be where the "Princes in the Tower" were imprisoned and murdered in 1483. Today the tower is furnished as it might have appeared during the 13 year imprisonment of Sir Walter Ralegh, who was charged with plotting against James I.
Beauchamp Tower:
The Beauchamp Tower was one of several towers used to provide accommodation for prisoners and several people of high rank were held here. The upper chamber contains many inscriptions carved into the walls by prisoners, including a memorial to Lady Jane Grey.
Yeoman Warder Tours:
Yeoman Warders (popularly know as "Beefeaters") have been at the Tower of London since the 14th century. Join one of their famous tours and learn about the Tower's intriguing past as they take you to the locations where history was made.
Tower Ravens:
Legend has it that Charles II was told that if the Ravens left the Tower, the kingdom and the fortress would fall, so he ensured a limited number would be kept here permanently. Visitors can see them wandering round the Tower precincts or visit their lodgings next to the Wakefield Tower.
