What You Can Expect
With your guide, follow the lead of knowing Lavapiés locals to visit two of the area’s atmospheric flamenco bars (Bar La Caleta and Bar El Burladero), where several acclaimed Madrid dancers started their careers. Chat about the city’s flamenco scene as you walk between bars and learn all about the history of the famous dance in Spain. Headsets are available if you have difficulty hearing your guide.
In each bar, watch impromptu, fiery and passionate flamenco performances while feasting on different plates of tapas and enjoying drinks. One drink — wine, beer or a soft drink — plus three plates of tapas are served in each venue. While the dishes vary, melt-in-the-mouth morsels of succulent chorizo, slivers of manchego and fresh boquerones (Spanish anchovies) are typical of the stellar tapas often served.
Having experienced your first heady mix of flamenco and tapas, continue to Tablao Villa Rosa, near Plaza de Santa Ana, to see a full 1-hour flamenco performance. Operating as a flamenco joint for more than a century, the bar holds inimitable prestige in Spain, and counts Spanish royalty and celebrities among its loyal patrons.
Take a seat to watch the show as a cacophony of castanets, music and feet stomping summons the dancers to the stage. Sip on a drink as the flamenco performers whirl and twirl in front of you, and soak up the electric atmosphere while watching the spectacle on stage. Your tour finishes as the show concludes, but you can stay longer inside the bar to enjoy more tapas and drinks (own expense), if you wish.
Great guide and amazing talent during the flamenco show. It was so much fun I'd recommend it to anyone, especially if you've never seen flamenco like me
This tour was outstanding. Gloria, our guide, was phenomenal. She speaks excellent English and is knowledgeable of US politics (much more than what we know about her country). The tour is capped at 12, but my wife and I were the only two for the evening we booked. We didn't get short-changed. In fact, we feel like we got a bonus experience. Gloria's knowledge of Spanish/Flamenco history is deep, and she shared other information about Madrid and Spain as well. This tour turned out to me our favorite night in Madrid.
