Had a fantastic day out - sun, snow, scenery (yes, snow!) what more could you ask for? Our guide was great although the real hero of the day was the driver who negotiated the winding mountain roads without battling an eye. Definitely recommend this trip as a break from the hustle and bustle of Marrakesh and a way of seeing another side of Morocco.
A brilliant day with excellent guide. The 4WD experience allows you to get right to the heart of the area.
A ride that should be done. Provides insights into the valleys and snowy mountain in the distance, takes you to a visit into the home of a family living in a primitive form, and another visit to a manufacturing plant of Argan oil (olio d'argan).
Really enjoyed the day. Transport excellent with careful driver but would've helped a lot had he been able to speak some English. Disappointed with this, the English speaking guide was in another vehicle. Could've done without the pottery stop but these always seem inevitable. Berber house and restaurant great. Scenery amazing.
The trip began with short stop at a pottery workshop, followed by a beautiful drive in the mountains with spectacular scenery.
The next stop was at a Berber home which was fascinating with mint tea and delicious fresh home made bread. We strongly recommend you take a very good handful of small denomination Dirham for the many local children you will meet on the way or at the very least plenty of sweets.
We were then driven to our lunch destination in the next valley which was rather disorganised and of average quality unfortunately.
The afternoon concluded with an interesting visit to an Argan oil producer..
The only downside to this tour was that we had booked an English speaking tour but much of it was not spoken in English during the afternoon and little explanation or translation was offered.
However, overall we would recommend this tour.
Overall this trip is definitely worth doing!
Regardless if you're in the city for a weekend or a week, make the time to do this trip! Its a proper full day adventure. The scenery is absolutely breathtaking and the Berber way of life will open your eyes to how good you have it at home.
You will have to share a 4x4 with some others but this was part of the fun, and we made some new friends. The driver didn't speak any English but we still manged to have a laugh with him.
Instead of giving money to the local Berber children, which will be at nearly every stop with their hands out -don't worry it's not too overbearing- bring a few sweets instead.
The only bad things I can say which are worth mentioning; I didn't think your basic needs were catered to that well. No drink is offered until at least 3 hours into the trip (even then it's a small tea), and another hour or 2 before you reach the restaurant. You aren't told to bring water but I would well recommend taking a big bottle of water per person. Especially in the 37c heat... We still ran out but it would have spoilt the trip slightly if we hadn't brought any. Also bring toilet paper, just in case. And go to the toilet before you set off as the first western toilet you encounter is a good 5 or 6 hours into the trip.
But don't get me wrong these were nothing compared to the positives.
Finally, I want to say BOOK THROUGH VIATOR as the exact same trip will cost you an extra £25 when you get there (well it was through Thompson anyway)
I really enjoyed our tour and it is well worth doing. The only thing i would say is that our tour guide spoke English but depending on the other passengers a lot of French can be spoken. On our tour there were 9 French speakers, so i felt a lot more was said in French than English but i was told by the guide that he was just responding to questions and that we weren't missing out. Overall, the scenery is beautiful and the Berber people very friendly. It is a nice day out of busy Marrakech.
We stayed a week in Marrakech with this trip was one of the day trips we had booked. The Atlas mountain region is certainly very different to Marrakech and it is worth the trip to go and see the differences for yourself. I would recommend this trip, however, with us travelling at the end of October we did not have the best of weather and it did impact on the whole experience. It was cloudy and raining most of the day. A real shame as we did not really see much so my review is most likely not as positv as it should be. The visit to a Berber house in the mountains was the highlight of the day for me. Sure, they probably have tourists stopping over on a daily basis (good on them for making a little bit of money off us!) but it is still their house and they let us Western tourists march in and take a look around. They served us mint tea and homemade bread (super yummy btw). It was pretty eye-opening with how little people live there and they still have a smile on their face. How different to our world. The guide was very nice and he answered any questions we had. Most of the trip involved being stuck in a 4x4 with the occasional photo stops. If you are staying in Marrakech for more than a couple of days I would recommend this trip.
A nice tour spoiled by a fellow passenger who wouldn't shut up and let us enjoy the views. Also our driver didnt speak a word of English which was a shame as it was an 'english' tour; the driver did his best, telling us about what we were seeing on route in French but we could only understand a bit of it. There were about 6 cars of people on this tour, and when we stopped at view points and for the meal with the whole group there was an english speaking guide. However we found that some of the other cars had the english speaking guide or english speaking drivers so we felt a bit cheated.
This was a good trip to see how the Berbers live. Watch out if you have problems with heights as the road through the mountains has no barriers and there are shear drops to the valleys below. The scenery was incredible.
