What You Can Expect

2-Day Phillip Island and Wilsons Promontory Tour from Melbourne

Native Wildlife at Wilsons Promontory

Get back to nature with an immersive, two-day tour of Phillip Island and Wilson's Promontory — two of the most popular destinations in Victoria for wildlife encounters and scenic beauty.

Depart Melbourne for the short journey south to Phillip Island, where you'll visit the Koala Conservation Centre and Seal Rocks, home to the largest fur seal colony in Australia. Step back in time at a working heritage farm on Churchill Island, then watch the nightly Penguin Parade as hundreds of fairy penguins emerge from the ocean and waddle home to their burrows.

On day two, explore the natural playground of Wilson's Promontory National Park through a series of bush walks, hiking tracks and seaside strolls.

See Itinerary below for full tour and accommodation details.

Day 1: Melbourne to Phillip Island (L)
Leave the city behind and drive to Phillip Island, a favorite Melbourne getaway and famous for its nightly Penguin Parade. En route, stop at Moonlit Sanctuary Wildlife Conservation Park, home to more than 200 animals, including many native Australian species such as kangaroos, koalas, dingoes, and various reptiles and birds.

On arriving at Phillip Island, visit the Koala Conservation Centre to see the adorable (yet sleepy!) koalas. Then at Cape Woolamai, take off your shoes, feel the sand between your toes and perhaps take a quick swim. Next its Churchill Island, connected by bridge to Phillip Island and steeped in history. The island is a working farm that continues to honor the traditions of a bygone era. Wander around the old homestead, visit the blacksmith and watch a sheep-shearing demonstration.

Delight in watching the playful seals that gather at Seal Rocks, before experiencing the highlight of the day, the Penguin Parade. Settle in to a specially designed observation boardwalk and witness hundreds of little penguins swim up out of the water and waddle across the sand and bush to their burrows.

Day 2: Wilsons Promontory to Melbourne (B)
In the morning, travel to Wilsons Promontory National Park, situated at the southernmost point of mainland Australia. Affectionately known as The Prom, it is one of Victoria’s most loved natural attractions and contains the largest wildlife-filled coastal area in Victoria. Explore the park from a series of walking tracks, such as Lilly Pilly Gully, Vereker Outlook or Pillar Point. Be amazed by the stunning scenery, fern gullies and if you’re lucky, you may get up-close views of kangaroos, wombats or even emus.

Later, take a coastal walk along Squeaky Beach, where the pure-white quartz sand sings under your feet.

The Island Accommodation is an eco-friendly hotel/hostel with both private and shared rooms (private rooms have private bathrooms; shared rooms have shared facilities). It has a large rooftop terrace with 360-degree ocean views, a cafe that serves breakfast and lunch, and lounges with entertainment areas.

Please note: Your guide will not be staying overnight at the hotel but will return in the morning to collect you and continue the tour.

What to bring

  • Good shoes/boots for walking
  • Appropriate clothing for warm and cold conditions
  • Sunscreen, hat and water bottle (1.5 liters)
  • Swimsuit and towel

Excellent tour, enjoyed both days. Highlights were the tour guide Natalie's knowledegable insights into the area, visiting the moonlit sanctuary and koala conservation centre. The penguin parade didn't let us down either. Stayed overnight at YHA - clean, tidy, breakfast basic. The next day was Wilson's Promontory - spectacular views and stunning beaches. Only criticism was no stop on the way back to Melbourne - it was 3 hour journey, could have benefited from a break. Tip: if doing the 2 day tour as we did, take enough food for snacks as only lunch on day 1 and breakfast day 2 was included.

There was quite a nice balance between the two days. On the first day, we did touristy things like visiting a heritage farm, the nobbies, and the penguin parade. It was fairly tame and I think it's good for those travelling with family. On the second day, we did a lot of trekking and sight seeing at Wilsons Promontory. This was the one that was physically strenuous. I would say it's perfect for those who are physically fit. Not an easy trek, but the views more than justify the effort!

Excellent and a very well priced tour that enables tourist to access really diverse and interesting parts of Victoria. Don't expect to see heaps of wildlife as depends on weather and season but those I did see were a delight. Tour guides knowledgeable and enthusiastic. The overnight if at YHA on Philip Island - don't expect others on the day tour to stay overnight as the two tours are treated as separate day tours so I had two different groups of people to get to know over the two days. Breakfast at hostel is basic - suggest bring your own fruit juice as only supply cereal, white bread, margarine and milk. I would have liked to have seen some grain bread in the freezer rather than cardboard like white bread. Otherwise, I toroughly enjoyed my two day.
