What You Can Expect
The first stop is 'Living Legends' at Woodlands Historic Park, home to some of Australia's most famous champion racehorses including Fields of Omagh, Might and Power, Silent Witness, Better Loosen Up, Rogan Josh, Apache Cat, Doriemus, Brew and Paris Lane. Many of these racehorses are winners of the famous Melbourne Cup, the race that stops a nation.
Living Legends was established to bring retired champion horses back to the public. It is situated at Woodlands Historic Park, a unique, picturesque location that includes a historic homestead, magnificent gardens, and abundant parklands. Morning tea will be served in the homestead overlooking the gardens, which are also home to kangaroos and other Australian native animals.
Continue to the award-winning Gisborne Peak Estate located in the Macedon Ranges cool climate wine region. The winery is all about excellent wine, gourmet food and magnificent views. Relax and take in the views over a gourmet wood-fired pizza lunch and sample the chardonnays, rieslings and semillons for which Gisborne Peak Estate is renowned.
Before returning to Melbourne, end your day with beer tastings at the Holgate Brewery, home to the 2008 Best Beer Brewed in Victoria trophy. Holgate is a traditional country pub with classic beer styles, full in flavor and rich in character. Spend your time here strolling down the main street of beautiful Woodend or relaxing in the beer garden.
We so enjoyed this tour! Meeting all the Champion Racehorses like Melbourne Cup winners Rogan Josh, Zipping and Efficient was such fun. The historic homestead was lovely too, and the Devonshire tea to die for. Woodfire pizzas at the wine tasting then the boutique brewery at Woodend finished off a lovely day. Simon the guide was great and you just felt like a mate was showing you around. Highly recommended.
This is a very enjoyable and interesting tour for solo travellers, couples or groups. We only had 7 on our tour and 6-12 is probably an ideal number.
The tour operator collected me from my Hotel on time and we arrived back in Melbourne on schedule or thereabouts. There is not a lot of travelling involved and plenty of time at the three locations visited.
My highlight was the visit to Woodlands Homestead including Devonshire Tea in the Homestead and the opportunity to mingle with so many retired champion racehorses such as Might and Power, Fields of Omagh and Better Loosen Up. No horse riding, just in case you were wondering!
Living Legends is a must for horse lovers or animal lovers generally, irrespective of whether or not you have any interest in horse racing. It was an amazing experience and our guide was exceptional. Her intimate knowledge of the horses, their personalities and mannerisms was nothing like I have heard before.
Our last stop at the Holgate Brewhouse was not too far behind Woodlands Homestead in terms of enjoyment. This iconic hotel is charming and was an ideal location to taste a fine selection of Holgates beers. Our hostess was very knowledgeable, engaging and an absolute delight.
The only let down was our second stop at a winery. While the location was very pleasant and the wood fired pizzas for lunch were okay, the wine tasting was lack lustre and disappointing. The only commentary we got was the name of each wine which we could have read ourselves.
Despite this hiccough, I thoroughly recommend this tour.
