Mornington Peninsula Horseback Winery Day Trip from Melbourne

Ashcombe Maze

Just a 90-minute drive from central Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula is a favorite day trip destination for those seeking a country escape. After morning pickup at your Melbourne hotel, relax in an air-conditioned minivan on the drive south.

Head to a local stables, where you'll climb atop a trusty steed for a 3-hour horseback ride through the rolling hills and vineyards of the Red Hill region. Dismount at two local wineries for cellar door tastings of renowned local chardonnays, pinot noirs and pinot grigios, and savor a farm-fresh lunch surrounded by the beautiful country landscape. No experience is necessary for the leisurely, guided ride.

After lunch, it’s playtime for all ages at the Enchanted Gardens. Wander through a labyrinth of hedge mazes, take an exhilarating plunge down a giant tube slide and frolic among fragrant lavender gardens.

For a sweet finish to the day, visit Sunny Ridge Strawberry Farm to pick juicy red berries straight from the field and sample fruit-flavored products (November to April). In the wintertime or during foul weather, visit Peninsula Chocolates to sample handmade cocoa treats and watch master chocolatiers at work (May to October). Relax on the return ride to Melbourne, where you'll be dropped off back at your hotel in the evening.

The horseback winery tour was absolutely amazing and by itself, a tremendous value for the price. The staff were knowledgeable, friendly and professional, but more than simply leading a tour, they teach you about riding horses as you make your way to each winery.

While this aspect of the tour was exceptional, all tour activities were not exactly as described. After the horseback tour, we were shuttled to a very lovely lunch on a set menu, and then we rejoined another tour for chocolate tasting and the maze garden. Those activities were enjoyable, but one of the reasons I booked this package was the inclusion of a visit to the hot springs, which ultimately did not happen. The tour description mentions that there are different activities that take place based on seasonality, but it specifically mentioned the hot springs during winter months, and again, that did not happen. The tour group we left Melbourne with attended the hot springs in the morning while we were on the horseback winery tour, and thus, we did not get a chance to visit the hot springs once linking back up with the original tour.

The entire tour was very enjoyable, an amazing experience for my partner and I, but we were disappointed to find we could not attend the hot springs. I would highly recommend the tour, but would advise that not all activities in the description are guaranteed.

The transport company could be better organized. We had to wait for almost two hours to be picked up after our tour of the wineries.

Would highly recommend this tour who is looking for a quick escape from the city while hoping to get some good R and R. Kudos to the friendly staff at the wineries, bunyip tours and my horse, Boris, for carrying me safely between wineries!!

If you are looking for something a little different to do take the horseback and winery tour. We enjoyed ourselves even though it rained and we got soaked. The horseback guides were great weather you were a novice or an advanced rider. Personally we were not too impressed by the wineries but the entire experience I would recommend.

The actual Winery tour was great!! The actual tour company that takes you to the winery was very disorganized. Our bus driver was never told to drop us off at a certain point Needless to say we missed40 minutes of our winery. At one winery we got 10 min. everything was rushed.
