What You Can Expect

Phillip Island Penguin Small Group Eco Tour from Melbourne

Nobbies, Phillip Island

A popular day trip destination from Melbourne, Phillip Island offers spectacular coastal scenery, unique wildlife encounters and an eco-friendly farming culture that goes back generations. Your Phillip Island adventure begins with late morning pickup at your Melbourne hotel in an air-conditioned minivan equipped with onboard Wi-Fi.

Your first stop is the rural Phillip Island Winery, where you can taste a variety of regional wines accompanied by cheeses and other specialty products. Tantalize your taste buds while enjoying glorious views of Bass Strait.

After you cross the bridge onto the island, visit the award-winning Rhyll Trout and Bush Tucker Farm for a guided tour of native Australian herb gardens and trout ponds. Learn about the farm’s sustainable growing and fishing practices and enjoy a farm-to-table lunch featuring organically grown produce and fresh-caught rainbow trout.

Continue on to the Koala Conservation Centre, where you can stroll along elevated boardwalks to spot koalas climbing and sleeping in a eucalyptus grove. Visit the on-site museum to learn more about these captivating critters. Next, head to the island’s southwestern coast for dramatic views of the Nobbies and Seal Rocks, home to Australia’s largest fur seal colony.

For an enchanting finale to the day, make your way to a local beach and settle in to a shoreline viewing platform for the famous Penguin Parade. As dusk falls, watch hundreds of adorable fairy penguins — the smallest in the world — emerge from the ocean and waddle across the sand and shrub to their nearby burrows. Opt for the Penguin Parade Plus or Guided Ranger Tour upgrade for an even closer view of this marvelous natural spectacle (see Itinerary below for details).

Once the penguins are safely tucked into their burrows for the night, relax on the approximately 1.5-hour return drive to Melbourne, where you’ll be dropped off back at your hotel.

Penguins Plus
See the Penguin Parade from an exclusive viewing platform. Located in an area that always experiences high penguin traffic, the Penguins Plus boardwalk seats half the number of people than the main viewing platform. About 50-60% of the penguins arrive close to the Penguins Plus boardwalk, meaning more penguins and fewer people!

Guided Ranger Tour
This small group ranger-guided interpretive experience includes a priority seating position on the beach in front of the general viewing area.

Phillip Island penguins seasonal cycle:
