Itinerary

Day 1: Montreal
Check in to your Montreal hotel at your leisure, and then spend the rest of the day and evening on your own, exploring the city and enjoying dinner at a local restaurant. Visit attractions like Bonsecours Market, Montreal Biosphere, Olympic Park or Notre Dame Basilica, or check out the beauty of Old Montreal, the city’s historical heart, where grand European architecture still stands.

Overnight: Hotel Espresso, Hotel Le Cantlie Suites or Fairmont Queen Elizabeth in Montreal

Day 2: Montreal – Quebec City (B, D)
In the morning, make your way to the train station and board your VIA Rail train to Quebec City. The 150-mile (250-km) journey takes about 3.5 hours and will go by fast from the comfort of your business-class seat. Enjoy breakfast on board.

Your exact departure time will be confirmed after booking and is up to you, but it is recommended that you take the 6:15am train so you will arrive in Quebec City with plenty of time to settle into your hotel and relax before your included city tour, which begins at 1pm.

When you arrive at the train station, head to your selected hotel and check in. Then maybe get a bite to eat before meeting up with your guide and other participants for your 2-hour ‘Rendezvous with History’ tour of Quebec City, one of the oldest European settlements in North America and the only remaining walled city north of Mexico.

As the name suggests, your tour includes some of the city’s historical attractions and locations, including the Latin Quarter, the Plains of Abraham, the World Heritage-listed ramparts, the world-famous hotel Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac (which you will already know if you’ve chosen the deluxe hotel option), the National Assembly, Notre-Dame de Quebec Basilica-Cathedral, City Hall, Place Royale and the Citadelle.

After your tour, which ends at 3pm, explore more on your own or rest up before dinner, which you’ll enjoy at Aux Anciens Canadiens in Old Quebec (arrive at the restaurant anytime after 5pm). This classic restaurant is known for its French-Canadian cuisine; dine on regional dishes like veal with mushrooms, steak frites, poutine, escargot and goat cheese salad as you soak up the traditional atmosphere of the Maison Jacquet, the large home that houses the restaurant. Dating back to 1675, the house has been converted into cozy dining rooms, each decorated with antiques and other collectibles.

Overnight: Hotel Chateau Laurier, Hotel Manoir Victoria or Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac in Quebec City.

Day 3: Quebec City – Montreal (D)
This morning, visit the Museum of Civilization (Les Musée de la Civilisation) and the Maple Museum – admission to both is included. Start at the Museum of Civilization, located in Old Quebec on the St Lawrence River. Browse its exhibitions that cover cultures and civilizations around the world, past and present, from Paris to Haiti to First Nations. (Note: From May 1 to June 22 and September 3 to October 31, the museum is closed on Mondays; if Day 3 falls on a Monday for you, you can visit the museum on Day 2.)

Afterward, continue your walk through Old Quebec to the Maple Museum, located at Canadian Maple Delights on Rue St Jean (about a 15-minute walk). Learn all about maple syrup, one of Quebec’s oldest products, including how sap was traditionally harvested. The highlight is certainly the tasting session, where you can try treats made from maple.

When you’re ready, make your way to the train station to head back to Montreal the way you came, in VIA Rail business class. It is recommended that you take the 3pm train, but that is up to you and can be confirmed after booking. Enjoy dinner on board.

When you arrive in Montreal, check back into the same hotel where you spent your first night, and enjoy the rest of the night at your leisure.

Overnight: Hotel Espresso, Hotel Le Cantlie Suites or Fairmont Queen Elizabeth in Montreal
