I would recommend every tourist to start off their trip with a tour like this. Old montreal is very pretty even otherwise, but with someone to guide you and explain the how and why of it, the little area just gets transformed. Our guide did a great job of taking us through the history of old montreal and he was the right amount of friendly, funny and knowledgeable.

The tour lasts about an hour and a half, and you do get admission into the Notre Dame cathedral with it (although not a lot of time if you want to really check it out and take photos). We did end up walking around places we didn't see on our own, and the guide does give you a good overview of the history of the area. It was worthwhile. We ate at the end of the tour at Cabaret Du Roy, a great spot with terrific food and outdoor tables, not in the absolute center of the tourist area. (The meal was on our own, not part of the tour)

When you show up at the meeting point they let you know there are two possible walking tours of Old Montreal, the west side and the east side. You pay for only one.
I recommend the east side.
The tour guide was excellent!!

We took this tour the next day after the hop on hop off tour and we both felt that this would have been a better tour to take first, partially because you received discount coupons for other locations that were on the hop on hop off tour. Also it gave us a better idea of where exactly we were at from the previous tour. Our guide was very knowledgeable and informative, kept our tour going at a good pace, with enough breaks for everyone to keep up physically. I would definitely recommend this tour.

A good walking tour but the pace is very fast. I barely had time to make notes on certain historical buildings and monuments we observed. The ninety minutes flies by quickly. There was a lot to learn on this tour and overall it was well worth the money as a good introduction to the history of the old city.
