It was OK, but could have been better

There is nothing inside the original Eagle's Nest - now it's a restaurant. The outside in the Alps is spectacular and beautiful, but there wasn't much to see or hear about for Eagle's Nest itself.

I was quite excited to see Berchtesgaden and the Eagle's Nest. First off, the Eagle's Nest was not the "historic" site that my wife and I thought, in that it is almost all restaurant. Secondly, we were not happy with the tour guide. She was generally knowledgeable, but her delivery was problematic, and some of us did not like how things were done. Yes, the view from the Eagle's Nest is something to see, but the best part was the Dokumentation Obersalzberg. Seeing the underground bunkers, etc., was excellent; however, the museum is ALL in German. For the price of this tour, we would have been better off finding a private method to get to Berchtesgaden and seeing the sights on our own.

This could have been an excellent tour with a different tour guide. The guide viewed himself as der Gruppenfuehrer and attempted to run the tour as an event centered around him. He started the tour by having a little tantrum because not everyone was silent while he talked. Then he proceeded to threaten to leave us if we did not return to the bus on time. He regaled us with a story of how a couple had completely wrecked a tour a few days earlier with their tardiness. Then he repeated his threats five or six more times. Otherwise, the destinations were excellent.

The word Berchtesgaden should not be included in the description. We merely passed through the town in the bus. We were allotted more time in a gift shop than in the Eagle's Nest. The lunch stop provided a limited menu in English and the portions were tiny. Be prepared for another 15 Euro charge per person to ride the special bus up the mountain to see the lodge and 3 Euro per person for entrance into the Documentation Center which is in German only. Motor coach was comfortable, views were breathtaking, guide was informative but pushy at times.

We booked the trip 4 months ago. The booking had a number to call 24 hours before to confirm the tour was still on. This number was only for Monday to Friday, our tour was on the Monday so I tried to call Saturday and was not able to confirm. When we got to the tour's meeting point there was only one seat left and there was 2 of us. I ended up sitting in a tour guide's seat. Other people that were on the tour that turned up after us were told they could not come, about 4 people I think. This set the tour behind time and the whole tour seemed rushed. The German guide spoke poor English and was not friendly at all. I would not recommend this tour.

The restaurant we were taken to to buy lunch did not let us pick from the regular menu. Other people coming in got full menu.

In view of the weather change we went to Eagle's Nest first and did not go to Berchtesgaden. Not sure what the itinerary was, i.e. only pass by Berchtesgaden and explore Eagle's Nest in depth or explore both Berchtesgaden and Eagle's Nest in depth. Guide was mediocre, and the tour was a little disorganized in the beginning. We were unsure where to meet up after exploring Eagle's Nest on our own. Bus driver, on the other hand, was certainly more helpful in dispensing tips and acted more like the guide!

Breathtaking views. Very little historical information supplied on what use was made of Berchtesgaden. Too much time was spent elsewhere.

The tour was okay but as always not enough time. Our guide was great.

I can't remember the guide's name but she was terrible. Her English was passable, but not enough to sustain a lecture on Hitler, her talk was awful. She also berated passengers, and she was more interested on keeping on her schedule than having people see any sights. She screamed at people to go to lunch because she had made reservations, when we wanted to go see the building because of how little time we had at the top of the mountain and most of us faced her wrath because we chose to tour the building rather than eat.
Most importantly, there was an extra 19 Euro charge that was not disclosed on the tour's online description. It was 47 Euro for a bus ride and an angry rant from the tour guide, who insisted that we pay her cash for all of the expenses once we got there. You're better off going on your own.
