The absolute BEST trip so far, thanks in the largest part to Roland, the GREATEST guide you could hope for...knowledgable in the history and a charming story-teller. The trip itself is fabulous, train from Munich, steam train from Prien to Chiemsee (too much fun) and then by boats between the islands...WOW! Scenic, varied and historic...what more could you ask for?
If you've not been to Versailles you won't need to bother once you've visited this amazing palace. On a smaller scale admittedly (except for the hall of mirrors which is actually larger) but the decor and the replication of the palace of Versailles is excellent and breathtaking. The fact that it is also on a lovely wooded island reached by boat and a short but sweet steam engine train ride just adds to the appeal of this tour.
Our interest in visiting Herrenchiemsee Palace was as a result of a recent British TV programme concerning the palaces of King Ludwig II. We were extremely pleased with the tour that Viator provided to Herrenchiemsee. Our guide, Franz, took full responsibility for the tour and was very knowledgeable about the history of the palace and the character of King Ludwig II. I feel this insight enhanced the tour greatly and enabled us to understand and appreciate what we were seeing. Thanks again.
This palace has to be seen to be believed. The amazing rooms and furniture in the palace, along with the accompanying story were incredible. The beautiful steam train and boat trip out to the island really added to the experience, and the food in the Monastery restaurant was impeccable!
Absolutely breathtaking! You really get to see how beautiful Bavaria is when you do this day trip! When you go to all the different Islands by boat you really see what a gorgeous place this truly is!
The guide, Franz, was wonderful.
We al had a wonderful day.
The Herrenchiemsee Palace Rail Trip was excellent. The Palace was more beautiful inside than Linderhof and the island location lovely. The guide was very good and
the trip was well organized with the train, then an old steam train, ferry and the Palace tour. Highly recommend this tour.
Excellent tour with Adam our tour guide who was extremely knowledgable about the history and background of Ludwig. This was the best tour we did in Germany- very enjoyable.
Have you ever had a steam train ride? You will with this trip. The tour guide was funny and had plenty of stories to tell about the area and what had happened there. The palace is not the only thing you see as you go there by boat you can also visit a monastry and/or a local beer making place on a different island.
The Herrenchiemsee Palace Rail Tour was incredible as was our guide, Adam. The rail trip itself was approximately an hour, and it is on the train that journeys to Salzburg. This does make the train crowded on a Saturday, and because of that, it can be difficult to sit together as a group. It is really the only fault I can find with the trip, and truly it is a minor detail. As for the actual tour, Adam not only has an exceptional personality to be a tour guide, but his education regarding King Ludwig II was remarkable. Adam made history palpable, and enlivening. At first, one travels to Herreninsel where the history of the monastery is introduced, and while walking through the wooded grounds, eventually the gardens of Herrenchiemsee Palace greets a person. It is exceptional to view, and a splendid treat to see the fountains turn on. The palace, itself, is indescribable, exquisite and opulent, and too, there is a museum there neatly framing the life of King Ludwig II. Fraueninsel is also lovely. The church on the island is splendid, as is the scenery. If one enjoys the romanticism of King Ludwig II, what his life embodied, then I would highly recommend this tour. It is unforgettable.
Very nice tour with a very knowledgable tour guide. Lots of information. Beats having to seat in traffic for a long time.
The tour group was small this time. Only 11 of us. Our guide was very knowledgable. She guided us through all the nooks and crannies of the castle and museum. She took great care to ensure she knew where all of us were. On the island, she showed us a bit of it. Made certain we all knew where and what time to meet. I felt comfortable with this tour. The end was rushed. The ferries were running behind schedule, it was summer, and she was concerned we would miss our train back to Munich. She demonstratedbthe foresight and called for cabs for all of us, missed the steam engine for the return trip, we all made the train in time. I would recommend this tour because it was a small group tour.
The palace was great. The boat ride was nice . Our guide was very knowledgeable and personable. The cog railway was fun. The train and scenery were nice.
Leisurely day trip with a small group and great guide! Enjoyed it very much.
the place itself is really good to visit but go with a good travel agent or go on your own.The lady guide was rushing things and she was more bothered about covering the spots rather than enjoying with some time spending at each place. there was a strike (train) but they had no alternative or contingency plans and we had to change multiple times to get to the place.
Visiting the palace was worthwhile as the gardens are beautiful and it almost surpasses Versailles. The only negative was perhaps since we went on a Sunday that the guide Yolanda was not that keen on spending the full alloted time on the island. As a result we did not visit the monastry.
Excellent guide (Adam). Worthwhile if you've done everything else in the Munich area.
I would love to report that it was a fabulous trip but I had to forego the excursion due to a medical emergency.
Maxine rushed everybody through the whole trip...while it was raining it stil was not necessary to make it rushed because there were many things to see and fotograph on the inside. Very knowledgeable though and a great group.
I have booked tours through Viator many times, and I have participated on Radius Tours in Munich on many occasions. This tour was conducted by Radius, but as interesting as it sounds, it was most disappointing. While the guide was pleasant enough, there was no more than 3 minutes of historical discussion on the palace, King Ludwig, the other sites on the nearby islands. The tour was more of a "see it yourself" with a guide to get you to the train and back. Most disappointing.
If this trip were my first time with Viator I would have not repeated the experience nor recommended the company.
Unlike my first trip with viator the guide was totally unprofessional, did not share much (if not all) about the history or cultural hints of the trip.
The only concern was about logistics (getting us from A to B was already challenging enough).
About the logistics, too, the guide was unable to manage the time in an efficient manner so to allow the group to spend the adequate time in the gardens, but was rather interested in getting us to the lunch destination (at 3pm in the afternoon!!!).
Having experienced the services of Viartor and being extremely satisfied with the guide to the Newshwanstein castle, I am aware the disappointment is only due to the guide itself.
For my next trip I will make sure to consult the agency directly so to be assigned to a specific guide.
What a shame as a second try!
