December to March is a wonderful time to be in Hawaii, when humpback whales are off the coast, making their annual migration! On this fun-filled Oahu tour, marvel at the beauty of the whales from a lookout point and snorkel the aqua waters of Hanauma Bay. Transportation and snorkeling equipment are provided on this tour, but you will explore independently during the ample free time.
Your tour begins with pickup from your Waikiki hotel, followed by a drive around Hanauma Bay, a beautiful sheltered bay surrounded by volcanic rings and a sandy beach. Continue to the Halona Blowhole, where ocean waves surge through a submerged tunnel and spout up to 30 feet (9 meters) in the air. You’ll also pass by Sandy Beach Park, a popular beach for skilled body surfers.
Arrive at Makapu’u Point, located on the eastern end of Oahu, and take a self-guided, leisurely two-mile hike up to the top to get a spectacular view of Makapu’u Beach Park, with its turquoise water outlined by white sand and black lava. From here, keep your eyes open for humpback whales playing in the water. You’ll find them by watching the surface of the ocean for sudden spurts of misty air, signifying whales exhaling after a long dive. Binoculars will be provided so you can get a close-up view.
After your hike, pick up the provided snorkeling gear, a flotation belt and a drink and snack before you are dropped off at Hanauma Bay. Don your snorkel gear and jump into the clear turquoise water, swimming on the surface or diving below to swim with schools of tropical fish and green sea turtles. If you need a break, hit the beach and relax on the sand.
