I would recommend to anyone who wants a thorough trip to Milford sound! Sooo good
Great experience in every way, glad we went with the smaller vehicle, fewer people, friendly guide.
If you want to see Milford Sound on a tour from Queenstown, you MUST book this one! Awesome guides, awesome bbq and awesome commentary while driving!
I was so excited about visiting Milford Sound and not only did this trip meet all my expectations, it far exceeded them.
Before I begin
- Yes, it is a long day we were picked up at 7:30am and dropped off at 8:30pm and we were the last and first respectively
- Yes, the weather is unpredictable and you may get sun, rain, clouds, wind, etc.
- YES, IT IS ABSOLUTELY WORTH IT!!
Our driver was Marty and he was absolutely fantastic. From the moment he picked us up to the moment he dropped us off, he was friendly, chatty, and provided a wealth of information. We did part of the same drive we'd done the day before, but it was far richer for all the history, facts, and local stories.
One of my favourite things about this tour is that it's as much about the journey as the destination. Some of the pit stops along the way were GORGEOUS and a great way to break up the long drive. Considering the ever-changing, winding, steep road and huge distance from Queenstown, we were so glad to have someone experienced at the wheel - it meant we could relax and take in the breathtaking scenery and surrounds.
We stopped at Cascade Creek for lunch and it was utterly serene the mountains, the babbling water, the flora surrounding us. Then there was lunch itself chicken marinated in mango and sweet chili sauce, lamb skewers, sausages, fresh bread, pasta salad, and fruit juice.
The small group means more frequent stops and a MUCH more intimate experience. I believe we had 14 people on the bus and not many more on the boat, making for a wonderful cruise experience. We were able to access every vantage point to see the fur seals, spot rainbows, and literally stand under a waterfall. I can't compare the experience of sailing through the fjords to anything else I've ever seen or done it's untouched and seems like another world.
Thank you so much, Marty, it was an unforgettable day and experience - and one we're still daydreaming about!
Outstanding in every way. Plenty of stops, personal attention, and the small group size meant our vehicle and boat could get close in to places the big groups couldn't. This tour took full advantage of the amazing Milford Sound, and the lunch was great too.
We really enjoyed our tour guide Marty. We also enjoyed being on a smaller bus with fewer people. The BBQ was an added bonus. The tour was very scenic and Milford Sound was beautiful even in the rain.
BBQ bus made the experience much more personal than booking with the large coach tours. Stopped off on route through the National Park at various points to appreciate the magnificent views. BBQ lunch at a lovely site, where only cars and mini buses could reach. Boat tour on the Milford Sound was awe inspiring, the most stunning scenery. Great host who was packed with information and was great fun.
A long day but enjoyed every moment.
One of the best tours we have ever been on! Nigel the tour guide was outstanding in his knowledge of the area and lots more besides! The scenery was amazing and the BBQ lunch provided was delicious, would highly recommend this tour to anyone wanting to see New Zealand at its best.
We booked as a couple but one of us was unwell and couldn't go at the last moment. My wife thoroughly enjoyed the trip which was made very special by the experienced and knowledgeable ecologist who runs this excursion. This is a long day and a small group led by an enthusiast compensates for what could be tiring travel to Milford. Tremendous value but above all a trip that really helps one to understand the ecology of New Zealand and Fjordland through the personal touch.
This was an awesome tour. the bar b q bus was awesome. The driver/ guide ws great. we had a great bar b q lunch in the Fiordland Nat park, we had a small group so it was very intimate. We also wet on the Milford sound in a small group so were able to take in all the sights without being crowded out. it was well worth it to have the small group. and the bar b q was wonderfully delicious.
This is a great tour. Our tour guide Nigel was exceptional. We had a great day out. I would recommend this trip.
Great day out despite the rain in the sound. Long drive from Queenstown, but lots of info on the way, well looked after and would do it again
We absolutely loved our day tour to Milford Sound on the BBQ bus! The guide was great; very informative and friendly and was always making sure that we were comfortable. We stopped off at multiple photo locations where everyone could stretch their legs, take in the views and have photos taken by the guide if wanted.
The BBQ lunch was amazing! Not only was it delicious but we were able to enjoy it in a beautiful native rainforest. There was plenty of food to go around and the whole group had a great time.
Milford Sound was a jaw dropper....something for everyone to put on their list of places to visit in a lifetime!
On the way home, our guide provided us with DVD options to help make the drive home more interesting once the sun had gone down. Everyone was dropped off at their door or whatever location they preferred. We were also provided with some handy local knowledge on where to go for dinner, lunch and day trips for the remainder of our stay.
We would rate this as our favourite day tour to date and we have been on quiet a few via Viator! Highly recommended!
This was a great full day trip expertly led by Nick, the owner operator of the BBQ Bus. Lots of stops en-route to Milford Sound which allowed us to see lovely areas of rivers, lakes and beautiful little pockets of forests.
A fantastic lunch in a secluded private area alongside a lovely patch of forest was a perfect way to relax before the final leg of the journey to Milford Sound.
The cruise on Milford was excellent and was well worth the drive. Picturesque mountain scenery towering over the fjord and lots of spectacular waterfalls makes Milford a destination well worth visiting.
All in all a very long, full day that met all my expectations. I would recommend a small bus tour like this rather than a huge bus loaded with people. I did both during my stay in Queenstown and the small intimate group situation was much better and allowed more flexibility to stop at various scenic spots on the way.
10/10 for this trip!!
Excellent day out! Great hosts, lovely lunch, interesting commentary, fabulous scenery and much much more enjoyable being in a small group than on a big coach. Highly recommend!
A wonderful way to spend the day. Our guide was perfect - knowledgeable, friendly, and responsive to the group. The small group setting was perfect and the tour was well paced. The BBQ in Fjordland was a wonderful lunch break! Glad that we did this trip as the Holland America cruise had to skip the Milford Sound phase due to storms.
This trip was amazing. Its a small family owned business meaning that you are well looked after and personally looked after. Nick and Muyami are excellent hosts. Also, as its a small tour this means you stop at places that the larger tour buses can't meaning that you see places most don't. Also the best lunch stop ever. This tour will make your memories of Milford Sound even better.
My daughter and I had a brilliant day. We appreciated being part of a small friendly group, stopping regularly to see the sights and take photos. The leisurely bushwalk and BBQ was excellent, as was the commentary along the way and having (our own) uncrowded Milford cruise. Our only regret was not taking the opportunity to do the glacier helicopter landing and bus connection at Homer Tunnel. Even the DVD about NZ birds on the return trip to Queenstown was fascinating. Thank you Nick.
Fantastic day. So glad we chose the BBQ Bus rather than joining a big tour group for our trip to Milford Sound - nice nicer and more personalised with the opportunity to stop at scenic spots that the big buses simply cannot go. Was very nice not to be following the crowd at all the stops... Excellent BBQ in beautiful spot, good rapport with driver and other guests with whom we ended up going to dinner with.
Tour was great. Tour guide Nick was very knowledgeable and friendly and gave us a grand tour with all the background and information along the way. It was a small group tour so it allowed for a more personal experience. It certainly was a plus to have such a great tour guide. I highly recommend it
The sites and the tour guide were excellent. I would suggest stopping different places on the way there and the way back. Stopping at the same town / store does nothing for the return.
wonderful trip - excellent commentary along the way. Fantastic view of falls - a must see for everyone.
