What You Can Expect

Milford Sound Full-Day Tour from Queenstown

Milford Road, Milford Sound

After you’re picked up at your hotel, settle in aboard a comfortable coach with panoramic windows and begin your Milford Sound tour from Queenstown. This day trip departs the shore of Lake Wakatipu, situated against the jagged backdrop of the Remarkables mountain range, and makes a stop in Te Anau for morning tea (own expense).

On arrival at the World Heritage–listed Fiordland National Park, step off the coach at the Mirror Lakes. Snap photos of this natural roadside attraction before passing through the Hollyford Valley. Your coach then enters the Homer Tunnel, emerging above the Cleddau Valley, where you’ll follow a footbridge over the Cleddau River to the Chasm to view the river’s turbulent whirlpools.

Upon reaching Milford Sound, board the Pride of Milford, a 112-foot-long (34-meter) catamaran. Throughout the 1.5-hour sightseeing cruise, listen to expert commentary about the pristine environment and natural landmarks such as Mitre Peak. Rising dramatically to a height of 5,551 feet (1,692 meters) above sea level, it’s one of many towering cliffs carved by a massive glacier in the last ice age.

Pass cascading waterfalls, and search for birdlife and marine mammals including New Zealand fur seals in addition to penguins and pods of dolphins. If you opted for a provided lunch, open your snack box (sandwich roll, cheese, crackers and fruit) or dig into a buffet lunch of international dishes, before you’re returned by coach to your Queenstown hotel.

Fantastic tour to see Milford Sound if you did not want to fly. A long day however it is broken up with photo stops along the way. Beautiful scenery. Cruise was lovely. We took the option to do a short helicopter flight landing on the glacier which was worth it. Bus driver Shale was very informative and made the day very enjoyable.

The tour was great. We were lucky with the weather which allowed us to fly by little plane back to Queenstown from Milford Sound instead of getting back by bus which is quite long trip by road!. The tour is a great photo opportunity.

This tour was out of this world. It was a truly magical place. Like something out of the Norse legends.

It is a wonderful tour, especially, the pick-up and drop-off service is excellently arranged and done. Everything is great except the driver is a bit rude.

Can and #39;t recommend this tour enough. The driver / guide was amazing, very knowledgeable, patient with a sense of humour. The scenery was spectacular and we were allowed plenty of time to take photos and ask questions. The driver stopped at key sites and also factored in comfort breaks.

This was an all-day tour but well worth the time. The views along the way were spectacular and Milford Sound was breathtaking. The only downside that I can recall was the buffet lunch on the boat. It was far from acceptable and we should have purchased a sack lunch instead.

Trip is a little long but the view is outstanding. All along the way we stopped and looked at glaciers and waterfalls. The boat ride in the sound was also outstanding just like the pictures show. Definitely a worthwhile trip.
