Itinerary

Day 1: Quito – Amazon Jungle (L, D)
Your Amazon trip in Ecuador starts with early morning pickup from your preferred Quito hotel for an airport departure transfer. When you arrive at the Quito airport, board a plane for a 30-minute flight north to the town of Coca. Upon arrival, a Yachana Lodge representative will greet you and transport you to the river port.

From here, put on your life vest and hop in a 57-foot (18-meter) motorized canoe for a three-hour trip upriver. Enjoy a box lunch and look for wildlife as your guide navigates one of the largest tributaries of the mighty Amazon River.

After you get settled in at the eco-lodge, located in the upper Amazon Basin, embark on a short afternoon hike led by your guide. When you reach a vista point, take in the panoramic rainforest views that extend in every direction as far as the eye can see. Enjoy dinner at the lodge, normally served at 7pm.

Day 2: Amazon Jungle (B, L, D)
After breakfast, embark on a journey into the rainforest with a knowledgeable local guide and discover the indigenous uses of various plants. Learn about the amazing birds and other wildlife that inhabit this dense region of the tropical Amazon rainforest – one of the world’s most biologically diverse areas.

After lunch, relax at the jungle lodge or explore the surrounding grounds on your own. Later in the afternoon, enjoy an optional visit to a local healer to participate in a traditional cleansing ceremony, and practice using a blowgun and spear – a fascinating cultural experience! After dinner, head back into the forest to witness a different side of the Amazon jungle, keeping an eye out for small insects, amphibians and reptiles that come to life at night.

Day 3: Amazon Jungle (B, L, D)
Rise early for a bird-watching excursion before breakfast or sleep in a little longer if you’d like. After breakfast, follow your guide on a search for the endemic hoatzin, a prehistoric bird found only in select areas of the Amazon. Afterwards, pay a visit to the Yachana Technical High School for the opportunity to meet the region’s next generation of leaders. This innovative high school, established in 2005 by the Yachana Foundation, teaches youth from impoverished communities throughout the Ecuadorian Amazon lessons in sustainable development and conservation.

Before lunch, return to Yachana Lodge and participate in a cooking class, taught by one of the chefs at the lodge. After your meal, enjoy free time or a siesta before you try your hand at making a basket from natural fibers and a traditional ceramic bowl fashioned from Amazon clay.

Overnight: Yachana Lodge in the Amazon

Day 4: Amazon Jungle – Quito (B)
After a hearty breakfast, your Ecuadorian Amazon adventure comes to a close as you travel back to the Coca airport for your return flight to Quito, arriving at the Quito airport around 3pm. (Note: flight delays in this area of the world are not uncommon. If you have an outbound flight on your last day, it is recommended that you fly after 9pm.)

Consider spending extra time in Quito, one of South America’s most attractive cities. Stroll the cobblestone streets in the quaint Old Town with its many churches, colonial buildings and interesting museums, or simply relax at a café.
