Itinerary

Day 1: Quito
A tour representative will meet you upon arrival at the Quito airport and transfer you to your hotel. Arrive in Quito at any time, since there are no activities planned for your first day until a welcome orientation at 6pm, when you’ll meet your guide and small group. (Look for a note in the hotel lobby or ask the hotel reception for the meeting location.)

Consider arriving early to get acquainted with Quito before your journey begins. Situated at an altitude of 9,350 feet (2,850 meters), this South American city stretches along a central valley of the Andes under the gaze of Volcan Pichincha. Visit the historical buildings, museums and ornate colonial churches of Quito's Old Town or stroll down Calle La Ronda, Quito's oldest street.

Overnight: Cafe Cultura Hotel or similar in Quito

Day 2: Quito – Otavalo (B)
Following breakfast, travel along the Pan-American Highway for approximately 2.5 hours to Otavalo, stopping en route at Calderon and Cayambe to taste the local biscochos (pastries). Reach the small town of Otavalo, tucked into beautiful surroundings north of Quito and famous for its indigenous market – one of the most important in Ecuador.

Tour the weekly market with your guide and gain insight into day-to-day Ecuadorian life. Watch villagers from the nearby countryside selling everything from handmade goods to livestock, fruit and vegetables. Learn about the local indigenous communities that reside in the area and still wear their traditional clothing made from intricately woven and decorated fabrics.

Spend the rest of your day at leisure, exploring quaint Otavalo on your own or enjoying the optional activities available (ask your guide).

Overnight: Pinsaqui Hacienda or similar in Otavalo

Day 3: Otavalo – Papallacta (B)
In the morning, explore the Otavalo market again with your guide. While the largest market day is on Saturday, there is a wide range of wares available throughout the week as well.

After browsing for local wares, continue on through the Avenue of the Volcanoes to Papallacta – a small Andean village situated about 10,830 feet (3,300 meters) above sea level. The rest of your day is free for you to relax in the local hot springs and thermal swimming pools at your amazing resort, taking in views of the majestic snow-capped Antisana Volcano, which reaches 18,872 feet (5,753 meters) skyward!

Overnight: Termas de Papallacta Resort or similar in Papallacta

Days 4-5: Papallacta – Cotopaxi (B)
After breakfast, travel south for about three hours along the Avenue of the Volcanoes, spotting Cotopaxi Volcano en route to another local hacienda. Standing at 19,360 feet (5,900 meters), Cotopaxi Volcano is the highest active volcano in the world!

When you arrive at La Cienega Hacienda, enjoy free time exploring the surrounding Cotopaxi National Park, the most visited national park on mainland Ecuador. Take a guided hike of the area or choose from several optional activities (ask your guide).

Overnight: La Cienega Hacienda or similar in Cotopaxi

Day 6: Cotopaxi – Quito (B)
Enjoy breakfast with your group before a guided walk around Laguna de Limpiopungo – a stunning lake situated high in the mountains in the shadow of Cotopaxi Volcano (weather permitting). Then, return to Quito and experience the charm and culture of the city, wandering around Old Town or celebrating your trip’s end in one of the many bars and restaurants.

Overnight: Cafe Cultura Hotel or similar in Quito

Day 7: Quito (B)
There are no activities planned for your final day, and you may depart from your hotel at any time.
