What You Can Expect

National Park of Cotopaxi Day Trip from Quito

Cotopaxi scenery

Leave Quito aboard a comfortable coach bus and make your way to the Chimbacalle train station. Say goodbye to the road and head off on the rails on a ride to Machachi (Thursday through Sunday only). Steam past breathtaking scenery and catch a glimpse of Ecuadorian countryside from stunning heights.

From Machachi, take a bus to Cotopaxi Volcano National Park, where you will stop at the Limpiopungo lagoon. If weather permits, marvel at the incredible environs and catch colorful birds as they soar overhead.

Enjoy free time for lunch (not included) before wandering to the local museum where you will learn more about the park’s unique biodiversity. Your tour ends with a walk to Cotopaxi, an active volcano 19,000 feet (5,900 meters) above sea level.

Return to Quito in the afternoon.

Note: Trains run Thursday through Sunday, so travelers who tour on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday will head to Cotopaxi Volcano National Park by bus before visiting a flower plantation.

Please Note: Due to new ash-fall from the volcano, Cotopaxi National Park is closed. Tours have been changed as follows to maintain a safe and beautiful journey:

        1. Cotopaxi National Park and Hacienda tour: Travelers will visit Quilotoa Volcano in liu of Cotopaxi. This stunning mountain with a                  brilliant blue lagoon in its crater is located just a bit further south.

When Cotopaxi National Park reopens, tours will return to normal operation. These changes are instated whenever volcanic ash makes travel difficult or unsafe for travelers.

From the moment we were picked up to the moment we were dropped off, this was a magnificent trip. Well organized and led by the most enthusiastic of guides, Alfonso, we were also blessed with magnificent weather which allowed us to see Cotapaxi in all its splendor. The train ride was fun, the walk around the lake allowed for a full appreciation of the environment and the final stop at the hacienda put the icing on the cake. Thank you.

The tour guide was excellent, with so much knowledge, very accommodating to everyone i.e. those who spoke Spanish and English, and just really nice. This was a great tour and I would certainly book again with this company.

A very fun day with an excellent guide! We especially enjoyed the hike on Cotopaxi, even if it was somewhat cloud covered at the time. We got luck later in the day and had a fabulous look at the entire volcano. Lunch at the hacienda was delicious.

I love volcanos. Cotopaxi was covered by clouds when we arrived . As we left, the cloud line lifted and we could see the peak! WOW!!! The hacienda was amazing! You have to eat lunch there! You will be sorry if you don't! Now I want to come back and hike to the top! Thanks Juan David!

Best day of all. The National Park is beautiful, the Hacienda too, and the visit of the rose factory was also awsome. Great guide with great knowledge of everything.

Loved the trip up to Cotopaxi. It all started with a fun little train ride up into the highlands outside Quito and continued on a bus up to the base of the volcano. A National Park guide provided excellent information and commentary. Lunch at the hacienda was great with a huge menu to choose from and very friendly and helpful staff.

We drove thru some beautiful country in addition to the national park. I especially enjoyed the train ride from Quito to the park. Afterwards we had a nice, relaxing lunch with music from a local group at a beautiful hacienda.

The weather was not cooperating, so we didn't see Cotopaxi, but later we were taken to very colorful village market and this was a highlight of the tour.
We had a great lunch lunch in hacienda. Driving in Ecuador seems very dangerous, but thanks good driver we survived and got back in one piece to the hotel.
