What You Can Expect

Icelandic Volcano Hike in Thorsmork Valley with 4x4 Jeep Transport from Reykjavik

See incredible Icelandic glaciers and volcanoes on your hike!

Depart from your Reykjavik hotel in a 4x4 jeep that has been specially customized to travel smoothly through Iceland’s rugged terrain, and make your way south to Thorsmork Valley, whose jagged landscape is surrounded by towering canyons and glaciers.

Wind through the foothills of Eyjafjallajokull Glacier, stopping briefly to take photos at Seljalandsfoss Waterfall, before arriving in Basar, a hiking center at the heart of the valley. Listen to a safety briefing and then set off behind your guide at a steady pace. The route is 12 miles long and takes you by Fimmvorouhals Volcano, an active volcano which exploded into being in 2010.

Zigzag up steep trails past craters and cooling lava falls, taking in outstanding views of the highlands. As you walk, hear about the country’s landscape and volcanic activity from the guide. Roughly halfway through the hike, you’ll stop to eat the packed lunch that you brought along with you (own expense).

Your 6-8-hour hike concludes in Basar, after which you’ll ride back to your hotel in the 4x4 jeep.

Please note: The paths are relatively steep and require a good general fitness.

Excellent hike ! Well organised and terrific guide. I would warn people that this is quite challenging - you must wear proper gear and be ready for deep snow on occasions. But overall it was worth it.

Simply amazing but not for the faint hearted. Some challenging areas on the way up to the top of the volcano. The scenery is beyond stunning.

The Volcano hike is spectacular in views and scenery. It is a very thrilling experience. Billy our guide was knowledgeable and entertaining. The hike is also very, very physically demanding 20km roundtrip and those who can not do a 20km walk that is uphill should think twice. Also, if you have fear of heights, this is not for you!!!! Some of the walks are very frightening and terrifying if you have vertigo or any fear of high places.
