We loved this tour. Our guide provided both fact and humor. It was all very interesting and just the right amount of time.
Being frequent visitors to Rome, we decided this time to visit the ancient port city of Ostia using this tour. Similar to what you see at Pompeii, but of course with a less dramatic history. Our guide, Giorgio, was an excellent and witty guide, who not only pointed out several aspects of the ruins military, commercial and residential, but wove into his presentation the operational and daily life of the Roman citizens who lived and worked there. The ampitheatre was a highlight. A most enjoyable experience.
Better ruins than Pompeii and only a tenth of the number of tourists. Some of the best mosaic's I have seen.
Excellent tour to a most interesting site. The guide was particularly knowledgeable on all aspects of the site.
These are some of the best ruins in Italy. I enjoyed it far more than Pompeii. The tour guide was anot archeologist and his knowledge was beyond what anyone could ask for.
Our tour guide Sara Napilantano (sp) was terrific. Her detailed knowledge of the Vatican and museum is incredible. Thank you Sara!
Excellent trip, with knowledgeable and helpful Georgio. While day trip with picnic could be even better, in summer heat the half day leaving at 8 am was a great compromise to see the main sights of Ostia but still have a reason to go back.
Excellent tour - with very small group and incredibly knowledgeable guide. Despite the heat we were enthralled with Ostia and all the stories that we were told.
We had an excellent tour of Ostia Antica. I am sorry I do not remember the name of our guide but he is a professor of archaeology. I was really overwhelmed with his knowledge and enjoyed the morning very much.
We went on the early morning tour which was the right decision as the afternoon temperatures, 23 degrees even in mid April, would have made the tour exhausting. It was fascinating, enhanced by our guide, Giorgio who has a vast knowledge of Roman history, and of the site itself...An archeologist he had been involved in the actual dig. He was not only informative, he brought the place alive for us.
This tour is fantastic. The ruins are equal to Pompeii. Our guide was an archaeologist who made the site come alive with his knowledge of the site and of the history of the area. It's a short drive from Rome and not to be missed.
A really wonderful half day tour. It started in the morning which meant we arrived in Ostia before almost anyone else. This makes a pleasant change from overcrowded Pompeii - and Ostia is a smaller more compact version of it really minus the brothel. Highlights include the mosaics and the fast food counter. Our tour guide Georgio ? was knowledgeable and relayed the history to the group with good humour and in a clear voice so everyone understood. Not as famous as Pompeii but more enjoyable.
Giorgio was our tour guide and he is fantastic! We thoroughly enjoyed the tour and especially liked the historical aspects of the ancient city. We would recommend everyone who goes to Rome to take this tour because it really helps in understanding the Roman culture and how it developed.
Wonderful tour! We had an early morning pickup at our hotel and wonderful guide, Chiarra. We arrived at Ostia Antica early before the crowds and it was very peaceful so we could walk amongst the ruins and enjoy all the sights. Our guide was most informative and since it was a small group we had lots of individual attention.
A most interesting and fascinating tour in regard to the history of Rome outside of the actual city. Very well preserved and cared for relics.
This was an inexpensive but terrific 1/2 day trip to the ancient port of Rome. It's as well preserved as Pompeii and is a great example of an ancient commercial town. Beautiful mosaic floors still very well preserved, as are the buildings. You can get there by Metro plus train, but it is so much more meaningful to have a guide, who was excellent. The port city was abandoned when the mouth of the river silted over so the city, over 2000 years, got covered over by mud and aside from some earthquake damage, many of the buildings, both commercial and residential, and still in fairly good condition. Ostia is a hidden gem that not many tourists know about and it is only 45 minutes from Rome. It is definitely well work 1/2 a day of your time, and the tour is very inexpensive. Definitely go to Ostia, and on this tour.
My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Ancient Ostia is fascinating and our guide was very knowledgeable and also had a great sense of humor. We enjoyed it thoroughly and would highly recommend it for anyone who wants to get an appreciation of what daily life was like in Roman times. The coach trip to and from Ostia was quite pleasant, and we enjoyed to pick-up and drop-off service provided as well. Denise, September 2014
This was an informative and enjoyable tour. Pickup from hotel and bus trip went smoothly. Giorgio, who was a little older than previous tour guides was a trained archaeologist and and quite knowledgeable about the site and its history, and had an excellent sense of humor which kept the trip enjoyable for all participants.
Ostia was wonderful. This was a great way to spend the morning; we could have easily stayed longer. I would love to go to Ostia again, although I would strongly consider getting an audio guide that would allow for more freedom in terms of where to linger.
This a wonderful tour extremely well organised and Giorgio was a wonderful, knowledgeable guide
