What You Can Expect

Ancient Rome Half-Day Walking Tour

See the sights of the Roman Forum on this exciting Rome walking tour!

Your Rome half-day tour starts near the Colosseum. After paying your entrance fee to the iconic attraction, head inside to explore the second and third tiers of the Roman amphitheater with your guide. Hear how seating was allocated to social status, with the Emperors and senators enjoying the best seats in the house, and plebeians toward the top. The stadium’s gladiatorial contests were its main attraction, and you’ll hear tales of the gory games where trained gladiators would fight each other for the amusement of the crowds.

After your Colosseum tour, set off to explore the surrounding area, discovering places that once represented the financial, commercial and political center of Ancient Rome. The main relics and ruins are clustered throughout the Roman Forum, so head inside to wander seeing history set in the site’s stones. Entrance fees are at your own expense.

Hear fascinating tales about the power and treachery associated with the Emperors of Ancient Rome while seeing the ruins of once-important monuments like the Temple of Caesar. Stop for photos by the white marble Arch of Septimius Severus, and gaze in wonder at the colonnaded Regia – once the home of the Kings of Rome. Other highlights include the Gemonian stairs and Temple of Vespasian and Titus.

Leave the Roman Forum and walk to Capitoline Hill, one of the Seven Hills of Rome. Stroll around Piazza del Campidoglio, a square designed by Renaissance artist Michelangelo, and gaze down at the sights of Ancient Rome.

Continue into Rome’s centro storico, to see all the sights around its historical center. Throw a coin in the impressive Trevi Fountain for luck, and then pose for photos in front of Rome Pantheon – one of the best-preserved Roman monuments in the city. Stroll around Piazza Navona, a lively central square, and learn about Bernini, a much-celebrated Baroque sculptor who designed three of the square’s fountains. Your Ancient Rome half-day walking tour then finishes in the center of town.

Please note: Rome's Trevi Fountain is currently under restoration until late 2015. A walkway above the central portion of the fountain will allow you to catch a glimpse of the ongoing work. Water will be drained during the process, but you'll still be able to cast your coins into the fountain for luck.

Wonderful tour. Elisabeta was a wonderful guide and kept things moving and entertaining, even on this very hot day! Would highly recommend this tour. Take the morning tour in the summer as the temperatures are unavoidably hot. My son and I both enjoyed it.

This is a SERIOUS walking tour -- we put on a lot of miles on a hot Roman summer day. But it was well worth it! The sights we saw are spectacular. Our guide was fabulous -- an archaeologist from Rome who was eager to tell us the inside stories about what we were seeing. An unforgettable experience! Bonus: we had headsets and a microphone for the tour guide, so we were able to hear everything she said.

Alfredo was excellent. He was knowledgeable and was always attentive to the group. Was a very informative tour. Be prepared to walk quite a bit. There are a couple restroom stops along the way. Total tour took 3.5 hrs.

Excellent tour that included all of the top sites to see of Ancient Rome! We had a wonderful tour guide who was very informative and spoke English very well. Just so you know what to expect, there is a lot of walking on cobblestone paths and a lot of steps within the Coliseum. Just wear comfortable shoes. This is a must-do tour!!
