The basilica is the burial site of its namesake Saint Peter, who was one of the 12 apostles of Jesus and who is likely entombed below the basilica’s altar. During your guided tour, you’ll see that the basilica’s interior is lavishly decorated with marble and ornate gilding. Sculptures fill the basilica, some of which are found in niches and chapels, including Michelangelo's Pieta.

After you leave the Vatican, take a pleasant stroll through Rome's historical center with your local professional guide. Visit the gorgeous Piazza Navona, built on the ruins of the Domitian’s Circus and home to the famous Fountain of the Four Rivers, a 1651 masterpiece by Gian Lorenzo Bernini.
