What You Can Expect
Next, follow your guide to St Peter’s Basilica, where you’ll also skip the main entrance line. As you walk around the world’s largest Catholic church, admire more art masterpieces like Michelangelo’s La Pietà sculpture and Bernini’s large baldachin altar canopy. The first half of your tour ends here, where you have free time to continue exploring on your own or enjoy a rest before rejoining the group for the afternoon portion.
In the afternoon, you’ll travel by coach to three basilicas in Rome that sit outside the walls of Vatican City but are official papal basilicas. Start at the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, known for its sculptural decoration and 5th-century mosaics. Bernini’s tomb also lies here.
Next, you have the opportunity to walk up the Holy Stairs (Scala Sancta), a set of 28 marble steps that once led to the Palace of Pontius Pilate and were climbed by Jesus Christ, according to Catholic tradition. Then enjoy your visit to the Lateran Palace and Basilica of St John Lateran, the official Cathedral of Rome and the seat of the Bishop of Rome. Finally, arrive at the Basilica of St Paul Outside the Walls, a UNESCO World Heritage–listed church that’s home to the tomb of St Paul, more ancient mosaics, colorful frescoes and the tabernacle by Arnolfo di Cambio.
This is the best tour so far we both have done in our life. Simply, no words to explain. It was perfect.
this tour was great . the guide was exceptional. she really had the heart and soul of the entire Vatican experience. She got us in before the vacitan closed due to a Papal address. she was great. I would rate this tour top notch.

This was a highlight of our trip to Rome. We knew we made the right choice as we approached the Vatican museums and saw the line to get in snake back around for blocks. We met our guide Barbara who did a wonderful job, she walked us though all those lines right in. Make no mistake the museums and St. Peters are full of people, but the guided tour made it much easier and interesting, honestly it would be a challenge to navigate it all on your own. In the afternoon we met our guide Pia, who is truly a gem. She escorted us to the basilicas outside the Vatican. City Wonders is fortunate to have a guide of Pia's caliber, she was not only knowledgeable, but very engaging. This tour is worth every penny.
LOVED THE VATICAN!!! Great little country, museum, and basilicas. If religion is not enough to make you want to go there, the art work is amazing. Tapestries, frescos, and sculptures, all amazing.
We had a young gentleman sorry, we forgot your name for the morning portion of the tour and Virginia for the afternoon. Both tour guides were knowledgable and readily answered questions. I appreciate that the group as a whole was very accommodating to me as I use a cane for leg and back issues and I slowed the tour a little but I hope that gave the others additional time to enjoy some of the extraordinary and historical artwork. Virginia would do a count of her group and I would stick up the cane to let her know I was there - most time I was behind a group of other tourists, but I appreciated that she watched out for me. It was a very enjoyable tour and we will do this tour again because we know we missed so much. For anyone considering this tour, be prepared to be overwhelmed with colour, not knowing where to look first, trying to absorb it all - just enjoy it!
Great tour, very informative. The second half of the tour we got on a bus to the other Basillicas and saw parts of Rome we might otherwise have missed. Both our guides were very friendly and well informed. Would definitely recommend. Just to mention the first half of the tour is 3 hours on your feet and a bit tiring but the afternoon part offers a rest.
Carmine and Pia were fantastic guides. So knowledgeable and helpful. This is a must-do tour...highly recommend.
This is a great tour informative and full of history the sculptures, paintings and relics were amazing. The guides were so informative in all aspects of the history of the Vatican and Basilica's
Fantastic tour, well worth it! The morning was spent at the Vatican Museums, Sistine Chapel, and St Peter's Basilica, and seeing the lines, we were very happy to skip them! Our tour guy whose name we forgot, very sorry! was incredibly knowledgeable and knew all the interesting bits of history trivia. In the afternoon, Rebecca took us around in a bus to see the 3 Papal Basilicas outside the Vatican St. Paul Outside the Walls, St. John the Lateran, and St. Mary Major. Being an art historian, Rebecca knew every detail of these masterpieces, the art, and the artists who made them. She made the history come to life and made it truly enjoyable!
