What You Can Expect
Travel into the area known as Ancient Rome to see Circus Maximus, the large open space where the famous chariot races — immortalized in the epic Ben Hur film — once took place, and then head back to central Rome to see Piazza Navona. Thronged by restaurants, cafes and bars, the popular square is home to some of the best examples of Baroque sculpture such as the three centerpiece fountains designed by Bernini.
Hop out of your minibus and stroll the short distance to the Trevi Fountain to throw a coin in the water for luck, and then wander across to Rome Pantheon, one of the city’s best-preserved ancient monuments. Step inside to admire the building’s mighty dome, and learn about the great Renaissance artist Raphael who is buried there alongside other eminent Italians.
Leave the Pantheon and continue by minibus into Trastevere, an atmospheric neighborhood, to admire its quaint cobbled streets and vine-clad houses. Ever busy with locals and visitors alike, the area is a popular spot for eating and drinking with many lively restaurants and bars to be found.
Start making your way past Piazza Venezia, home of the spectacular Monument to Vittorio Emmanuele II, and then travel up Gianicolo Hill to ogle Rome’s glorious panoramas. After capturing the sights with a photo, finish your tour with a light lunch if you select the morning departure or with an aperitivo that includes a glass of wine and an Italian delicacy (selection of prosciutto, cheeses, mozzarella, olives and Italian seasonal vegetable) in a traditional Roman osteria in central Rome. Bid your guide goodbye inside the osteria and enjoy more wine and food at your own expense, if you wish.
Please note: Rome's Trevi Fountain is currently under restoration until late 2015. A walkway above the central portion of the fountain will allow you to catch a glimpse of the ongoing work. Water will be drained during the process, but you'll still be able to cast your coins into the fountain for luck.
This tour was absolutely wonderful and charming. One of the best parts of my entire trip to Italy. Our tour guide, Luca, was wonderful. He showed us around some of Rome's most beautiful sights including the Piazza Navona, Pantheon and even Saint Peter's Basilica after the dinner. Dinner was very good, Luca showed us how to properly serve wine as we tasted homemade meats and cheese platters. We also tried the Ravioli at the restaurant which was just as great as Luca said it would be. My mother and I had an excellent time on this small group tour (where there were only 4 of us)! :)
Really enjoyed it. Guide very good and nice to finish with authentic taster meal.
Great first night activity. Wonderful food.
Our guide Sergio was very informative and I loved that he took us into some of the "back alleys" to see some "off the beaten track" sites. He was also very considerate to one of my travelling companions that had a bad knee. My complaint/disappointment is that this tour was at 6:00pm and it wasn't dark yet, so we didn't really get to see Rome at night. It wasn't dark until the very end of the tour, and I picked this tour specifically to see Rome at night.
