What You Can Expect

Rotorua Maori Hangi Dinner and Performance

Rotorua Maori Hangi Dinner and Performance

After hotel pickup, you’ll travel by air-conditioned coach to Tamaki Maori Village, situated deep within the forest about 15 minutes from Rotorua. En route, your guide prepares you with information in anticipation of an authentic Maori hangi dinner, and shares protocol for visiting your indigenous hosts at the marae.

Hear an eerie cry of welcome before you enter, and experience the powhiri (welcome ceremony) by a proud descendent of New Zealand’s ancient warriors. Pass crackling open fires and traditional whare (houses), and listen to classic instruments as you observe a re-enactment of daily activities and traditional arts and crafts typical of a pre-European Maori village.

In the wharenui (meeting house), see haka song and dance in a powerful performance by a Rangiatea cultural  group. When it’s time for the hangi feast, dig into slow-cooked meat and vegetables roasted in underground earthen ovens.

Your 3.5-hour tour ends drop-off at your hotel in Rotorua.

An amazing experience. Wonderful insight into the Maori customs. They were very friendly and after showing us around their village, and doing the haka dance, they provided us with the most amazing dinner that they cooked underground. Definitely an experience not to be missed.

This hangi dinner and performance was excellent. Transportation showed up when promised, and events occurred as scheduled. The careful explanation of the Maori welcome/greeting was excellent. The information about Maori life and culture was also terrific, and very authentic. The performances and the tattoos were outstanding.
We attended another performance in Rotorura and while it was good, the experience was far superior.

Great fun. Cheeky without being tacky. Excellent introduction to Maori culture and people, and to be accepted as a friend of the Tamaki family.

This tour was excellent. We learnt about the Maori culture using a fascinating format. We saw Maori dance, songs, weaving, games, weapon making and general cultural experiences. We saw the hangi dinner being made and had our dinner at the village . Our driver had great experience and was very knowledgeable and passionate about his culture. I would recommend this tour.
