What You Can Expect
After breakfast, hop back inside your minivan and relax on the 20-minute journey to Schloss Hellbrunn — an Italianate 17th-century palace — while your guide regales you with the history of the Von Trapp family. Hear about Liesl von Trapp and then see Schloss Hellbrunn’s gazebo where she famously sang 'Sixteen Going on Seventeen' with the dashing messenger, Rolf.
Hit the road again and travel to the Salzburg neighborhood of Aigen. While not featured in the film, the town was home to the real-life Von Trapp family, around whom the much-loved story was based. Head inside Villa Trapp for your tour, seeing the rooms where the Von Trapp family choir would rehearse. Hear of Heinrich Himmler, the feared Nazi, who later used the villa as his summer vacation home, and learn of its use today as a family-run guesthouse.
Leave the city and travel to Salzkammergut, a breathtaking region typified by Alpine lakes, scenic valleys and mountain landscapes. Stop for photos in the sleepy mountain town of St Gilgen, posing in front of the Schafbergbahn — the mountain railway that was used in the film – and then continue to Mondsee. The star attraction of the pretty lakeside town is Mondsee Cathedral — a distinctive yellow-fronted church that achieved fame as the Sound of Music's wedding scene.
After roughly one hour, return to your minibus and relax on the journey back to central Salzburg, finishing your tour at your hotel.

This tour for our family was all that we expected it to be and more. Our tour guide, Peter, was amazing! He was friendly, professional, and knowledgable. He helped make our day a memorable one. The included breakfast at Schloss Leopoldskron was delicious. The private tour does cost more, but for a once-in-a-lifetime tour with our kids and their wives, this was most definitely the way to go. It's much better to see things up close and personal...not from across the lake, for example. We highly recommend this tour!!
This tour was amazing!

Natasha was great
This was an amazing day and our guide Natasha made it even more special she made the day for us with memories never to be forgotten
This was the most amazing tour. Our driver was very professional and so informative. This was a tour of a lifetime.
We spent 3 weeks in Europe and this was easily the most wonderful experience we had during the entire trip. We were a bit concerned that what we would receive would match up with the price but the day far exceed our expectations. We originally booked this tour because my grandmother moves very slowly and uses a wheelchair for any distance walking, and we were concerned about keeping up with a big tour group; however, if you can squeeze it into your budget this is the best tour ever.
Starting the day off at Leopoldskron Palace was amazing, made better by all the people telling us that it was closed to the public and none of the tours went there, the closest we would get was the other other side of the lake. Seeing the amazing rococo building that Max saved just really set the mood for the day.
We had a list of must-see places that I had informed the company of before hand and also shared with our tour guide at the beginning of the day and they were 100% accommodating, I was concerned because communication before the tour was a little challenging but I don't know if that was from the viator end or Panoramic a Tours in Salzburg, but it didn't matter because they had all my messages and planned accordingly.
Our tour guide, who's name I can not remember now, was fantastic! He is a a Salzburg native and his knowledge of the area was impressive, so along with the history of the movie and the real history of the family I learned quite a bit about the history of Salzburg and Austria as he was able to answer any question we threw at him. The entire day our guide was generous with information, funny, personable and engaging. Our guide ended the tour with a sing along of sound of music songs on our way back down the alps, the perfect end to a perfect day.
Top rated! Had a lovely time at the Scloss Leopoldskron and had a surprise visit and music from Elizabeth Von Trapp the granddaughter of the Baron at their former home! Tom, our guide, was first rate! Very well worth the time and fare!
What a wonderful private tour!! Our family of five just loved this day!!! Was so nice to see the extra sights not available on the regular SOM tour. Lisa, our tour guide was just wonderful and we just loved her. Very easy going and VERY RELAXED tour. . .this is the way to go and worth the extra expense. So many BEAUTIFUL places to see. We loved seeing the actual home of the Von Trapps. An onsite tour is done at this home and it was just fascinating to hear the actual story that inspired the film. Would highly recommend this tour and we will definitely look for other private tours through Viator to book in our future travels.
The private tour is well worth it. We especially enjoyed our visit to and breakfast at at the movie's Von Trapp family mansion and also our visit to the real-life Vont Trapp family mansion.
