Arenal Volcano and Hot Springs Day Trip from San Jose

Hot springs in Costa Rica

Discover what makes Arenal one of Costa Rica’s most popular destinations for adventure and relaxation. Your full-day tour begins with early morning pickup at your San Jose hotel in a comfortable air-conditioned coach. On the drive to Arenal, make a quick stop at the charming town of Sarchí, where local artisans have been making Costa Rica’s brightly painted wooden oxcarts for generations.

After arriving at Arenal Volcano National Park, take in breathtaking views of the nearby volcano. One of the most active volcanoes in the Western Hemisphere, it emits a near-constant stream of smoke, ash and lava from a crater that rises an impressive 5,436 feet (1,657 meters) above sea level. The last major eruption was in 1968, and park officials carefully monitor volcanic activity to ensure visitor safety. Learn about this fascinating area’s history and geology from your guide as you admire the sight of the volcano rising out of lush surrounding vegetation.

Relax over a delicious lunch at Arenal Volcano Inn Resort or La Perla Restaurant, and then head to the nearby Baldi Hot Springs for a rejuvenating afternoon. There’s something for everyone at this family-friendly spa, which features 25 different thermal pools of varying temperatures surrounded by beautiful tropical scenery and waterfalls. Little ones will love a kids’ area with a splash zone and several different water slides.

As night falls, enjoy a magical atmosphere of steam rising from the pools as the lights turn on and the stars come out. Savor a delicious dinner at the spa’s on-site restaurant, and then relax in your newfound state of bliss on the drive back to your hotel.

If you have never seen a volcano in your life, then here's your chance. I hadn't and it was worth it. Thankfully, we were very lucky, as our guide told us who was terrific, by the way that it was a relatively clear day, so we could see it in all its glory. A word of caution to those with physical ailments: There are a number of steps to go up to the clearing to see the volcano. If you cannot climb steps, which are created into the grassy, slightly steep and rocky hill, you will not be able to enjoy this. The Hot Springs resort visit was INCREDIBLE. Great for adults. Great for children. Yes, there is a separate area for children to enjoy. Adults, however, must be present with them at all times. You must remember to take money with you to rent towels, but the money is returned once you return the towels. There are a number of springs to choose from. You are able to go from spring to spring. Bars are available, and restaurants are on site, including a buffet. Gratuities for the guide and bus driver are welcome. Note: Included with this tour is lunch. However, alcoholic beverages and soft drinks/sodas/juices, etc. are not. Those are to be paid for separately.

It was a wonderful group of people on the bus. The tour guide was friendly, personable and answered all questions...his knowledge of Costa Rican history and culture was much appreciated. One of the highlights of our trip, we loved the Baldi Hot Springs.

We had an amazing time! We learned so much about the local culture, agriculture, and the terrain. Our driver deserves an award and our tour guide was fluent in both english and spanish. The lunch stop was at a restaurant near the vollcano with beautiful views. The food was great. Our tour guide Mario always offered his help. Baldi Springs were exotic, clean and relaxing. My girlfriend and I were able to be alone in them because of the amount of pools they had. I feel like a kid again after flying down the water slides! This is a must do and made our trip a memory that we will share for a lifetime!
