A MUST-DO if you want to see beautiful scenery, watch animals in their natural habitat, travel up a river to a small village with a beautiful beach and learn a lot about plants, history, animals, the ecosystem and much more. Frequent stops en route, good food and lots of photo ops. Tomas, operator and owner of Jungle Tom Safaris, who is passionate about his work, is probably the best guide anyone can hope for. I highly recommend this tour.

The tour itself was fantastic. We had a wonderful guide, Mario, and a wonderful driver, Binnie, and they made sure that we saw all the animals, scenery and shared information that was of interest. The park was lovely, the boat ride relaxing and we say sloths, crocodiles, a cayman, monkeys and lots of beautiful birds. Great day!
Booking the tour through Viator was frustrating. We booked online and the confirmation told us to call the local carrier, Grayline, to find out what time they would pick us up. We called, gave the confirmation number, and they immediately told us that there was no availability for the day we booked. The tour had to be rearranged to three days later and there was a risk that we wouldn't be able to go since we had planned our schedule based on the Viator availability. Please make sure your website is up to date so people don't end up disappointed.

This is a MUST tour. You will see a lot of different animals, birds, monkeys and krokodils, and its all just outside your boat.

Fantastic! Our guide was incredible and went out of his way to find wildlife for us to view; he even got up close and took pictures for us if we wanted help.

Although a long trip (ca. 12 h), I loved this trip. The guides were VERY knowledgeable and super friendly. There was lots of wild life to see and even on the way to Tortuguero the guides always were watching out for things to see by the road. They spotted e.g. a sloth just by the road side and gave us all the time we needed to take some pictures and observe. Although many hours a very relaxed trip.

Hotel pickup was on time (5:45am). The driver/guide was definitely an interesting guy. I learned quite a lot from him, not only about Tortuguero National Park, but about life in general. He had many profound thoughts and observations to share. During the van ride, we saw many diverse regions of Costa Rica. The guide told us a lot about the flora and fauna. We stopped for a delicious breakfast (included). Our visit to the banana plantation and processing plant was a highlight.
We arrived at the boat dock and had a quick break before boarding the river boat. this boat was propane powered as a means to be more environmentally responsible. Along the river the guide pointed out many species of animals that were sighted, including some crocodiles and monkeys. Just before we arrived in the village of Tortuguero, we had a very nice lunch at a very nice restaurant (included). We then re-boarded the boat for a few minutes and arrived in the village. We walked over to the beach. Sand was dark and coarse...not exactly what I was expecting of a Caribbean beach. We strolled through the village for 20 minutes or so before getting back on our river boat. We arrived back at our hotel around 6:30 pm.

This trip should not be done in one day! Too much traveling time for too little sightseeing. The trip includes 4 hours by bus, then 2 hours by boat (can see monkeys and birds on the way) to arrive Tortuguero. Then a good buffet lunch is served, a fast walk in Tortuguero town and another 6 hours of trip back to San Jose.

Not worth the drive from San Jose for a day trip - road is not paved and bus can be tightly packed/cramped. Boat speeds too quickly to see many animals.
