What You Can Expect

El Yunque Rainforest Half-Day Trip from San Juan

La Coca Falls

Visit the only tropical rainforest in the United States National Forest system, on this half-day exploration of one of the Caribbean’s most unique natural environments. Over the course of your 5.5-hour trip, you’ll walk the park’s nature trails, surrounded by tree orchids, giant ferns and wildflowers, as you venture to a camera-worthy collection of waterfalls and panoramic vistas in northeast Puerto Rico.

Start your day with pickup around 7:45am from select hotels in San Juan. Then drive from San Juan to El Yunque, admiring the typical native towns and changing scenery as your tour climbs ever-higher to the rainforest. This one-of-a-kind ecosystem is named after the ancient Indian spirit Yuquiyu, who they believed once reigned over all of Puerto Rico, protecting the island and its people.

From there you’ll begin your an easy walk on one of the park's trails, keeping an eye out for any of the area’s endangered wildlife. Make your way along paths thick with tree orchids, giant ferns, wild flowers and tropical hardwood trees, and keep your camera ready for panoramic views from the trails’ scenic overlooks. You'll also stop by La Coca Waterfall, where you'll be able to capture a few more postcard-worthy pics.

Then make your way back to San Juan, arriving back at your hotel in the early afternoon around 1:15pm.

Although a little late, our tour guide, Sammy, was friendly, energetic, flexible and knowledgeable! We had a great mix of people and with me being 7 months pregnant, I felt like the walking was just right. We'd drive a bit, then stop for exploring, drive higher, stop and explore. There was a bathroom break towards the end which was perfect for me, ha ha. My husband would have liked something more adventurous but overall found it very interesting and diverse. One of the best things we did in our 5-day stay in Old San Juan!

Our guide Victor Martinez was the best!! He's very fun and engaging and there's no way you'll get bored on his tours! He thoroughly explained the geography and ecosystems of Puerto Rico and was very informative. We saw a couple of waterfalls and streams, went on top of the tower and did a light hike in the forest. Besides the slippery terrains this tour is very easy and good for families. We had the chance to take many beautiful pictures and never felt rushed. You'll get a little wet...but hey it's a rain forest... so dress accordingly. We didn't have an umbrella and Victor had a few to share with our group. I recommend bringing your own food and water but if you didn't have time there's a cafe in the first stop. Remember to give them a call the day before to ensure they pick you up at your hotel since it's a little bit of a drive from Isla Verde to El Yunque. It was worth it!

Our guide, Mr. Martinez, absolutely made the trip! His knowledge of and passion for both Puerto Rico overall and the rainforest in particular are infectious. He had a vast array of knowledge about the fragile ecosystem on the island and the many damages it has suffered over the years. He led us through many key sites throughout the forest and pointed out many interesting things along the way including wildlife and plants, etc. It was an excellent tour and I highly recommend.

Hector Rodriguez was the absolute best tour guide ever!!!!! If you are looking for a fun time, a wealth of information and meeting a new friend. Request Hector!!!!!!! I can't say enough great things about him! Totally made my teams trip. We had people from all over the world in the group and everyone of them was super impressed. We will be calling every time we come to the island.
