What You Can Expect
Step onto dry land, pay your entrance fee to enter the parkland at the volcano, and enjoy roughly 1.5 hours of free time for a stroll around the lunar-like landscape. Have your camera ready to capture photos of the dark volcanic cliffs cutting a contrast against the blue waves of the Aegean Sea, and look out for pieces of magma and other volcanic rock formations as you walk around.
Meet back up with your guide, and continue your tour with a walk to the volcano’s hot springs for a relaxing and reviving bath. The naturally formed pools were created from volcanic activity and are said to have medicinal powers against skin and bone disease.
Feeling relaxed, return to your boat and cruise across the water to Thirasia, a large island just adjacent to Santorini’s northwestern coast. Forming part of the remains of ancient Thira, Thirasia is sparsely populated and most of the islanders reside in its main village. Enjoy two hours of free time here to explore and walk around the village’s pretty streets, lined with white Cycladic houses and colorful flowers. Or perhaps use your free time to find a cafe for lunch (own expense); ask your guide for tips.
Return to your boat in the early evening, and cruise back to the Athinios port where your minibus awaits, ready to drop you back at your hotel. Alternatively, upgrade to include a trip to Oia to see an unforgettable island sunset. Simply hop off the boat at the Oia stop on the way to Athinios port and walk to Oia’s old port. The village is said to be the best place on the island to see the sunset, and the views of the sea and the famous Santorini caldera under the glow of a red sunset are legendary. After the sun goes down, finish the day with a hotel drop-off.
This tour was amazing!
Good tour due to weather conditions we lost lot of time in travelling
The only thing I would like to say is do not book this tour with viator. Wait until you are in Santorini, the prices are almost triple online than purchasing in person. Great tour and worth the money, but not 60.00 per person. We spoke with other people on the tour and they spent around 20.00 per person for the same trip.
Was a lovely trip and a wonderful day. On the return on the bus back to hotel was a bit Chaotic..Bus driver missed our stop and then we had to taxi back to hotel...not a big deal. would recommend this trip
The trip was highly organized. Our tour guide was the absolute best!! He was very knowledgable abut the geology of the volcano. Wish the hot springs were really hot a little false advertising there! Otherwise, it was a perfect day!
The tour itself was great. The guide was excellent!
However they state "hotel pickup" which did not happen. They called the day before to say to meet at a point in the city (Fira) that was about 1km walk from the hotel.
Wear comfortable shoes for the climb up the mountain and up Oia cliff as well
Very friendly and knowledgeable english speaking guide. Had an enjoyable day trip on the boat. Great views on the volcanic island but plenty of climbing and walking to do.
My husband and I had a great time climbing the volcano, swimming in the hot springs, climbing the hill in Thirasia and ending up at Oia for the sunset which is where we were staying so we did not have to get on the bus and travel back to our hotel. There are a couple of things that people need to be made aware of before they book this trip. You need to be in pretty good physical shape to do some of these things.
Climbing the volcano some people could only go to point A because it was strenuous and very hot for September. You have to swim to the hot springs about 300 metres. The donkeys dont go all the way to thetop Oia so you need to walk up some stairs.
Hot Srings are probably not that worth it. Crowded, dirty, You have to swim from the boat in which is fine but its kind of rocky and uncomfortable at times.
The volcano and Thirasia were great.
