After pickup from your downtown Seattle hotel in the morning, take a scenic 2-hour drive by luxury Mercedes vehicle to Mount Rainier National Park. Breakfast (pastries and tea) is served on the ride.
Cupped between the jagged Olympic Mountains to the west and the volcanic peaks of the Cascade Range to the east, Mount Rainier stands tallest at 14,411 feet (4,392 meters). On your drive, enjoy views of old-growth forests, lakes, waterfalls, wildflower meadows and glaciers clinging to the active volcano, whose peak is encased in more than 35 square miles (56 sq km) of snow and ice.
Take out your provided binoculars and spot birds and other wildlife such as coyotes, elk, deer, fox and black bears roaming the mountainside. Your guide will lead you on a short hike or snowshoe trek (during winter months) along the Nisqually Vista trail or, if you’re up for feeling extra adventurous, along a more challenging route. Have your camera ready as you relish the dramatic scenery and breathe in the fresh mountain air.
At midday, enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch with wine (see a sample menu in the Itinerary section below). End with a visit to Longmire, a visitor center located with the Longmire Historic District, listed under the US National Register of Historic Places. You'll learn that this is where the park’s roots began.
You’ll then be driven to your hotel. For dinner, there are many restaurants near your hotel that your guide can recommend.
Overnight: Hotel Murano (rated 4.5 stars on TripAdvisor) in Tacoma
Day 2: Tacoma -- Mount St Helens National Volcanic Monument (B,L)
After breakfast, spend the day visiting one of the region’s most famous attractions, Mount St Helens National Volcanic Monument. Stop to take photos on your ride there.
Arrive at the ‘blast zone’ at the Johnston Ridge Observatory, just 5 miles (8 km) from the crater. Enjoy amazing views of the steaming volcano and listen as your guide shares stories about the infamous 1980 eruption, including how the ecosystem is recovering and how the impressive reforestation project is impacting the area.
Inside the observatory, interactive displays and theater presentations portray the sequence of geologic events that transformed the landscape. You'll learn how Mount St Helens has taught scientists new answers to old mysteries, helping them create new methods of monitoring active volcanoes and forecasting eruptions. You’ll also read eyewitness accounts from eruption survivors.
Follow your guide on a nature walk along the Eruption Trail, where you’ll see the lava dome, crater, pumice plain and the landslide deposit. On your return, walk along the Hummocks Trail – marked from one of the largest landslides in history.
At midday, enjoy a gourmet picnic lunch with wine. After your tour, relax on the drive back to your Seattle hotel.
