Act 1
Violetta returns to Paris after a year's absence and throws a grand party to mark her return under the protection of Baron Douphol. Flora, a rival courtesan, enters with the Marquis Gaston and his friend Alfredo, who has adored Violetta from afar and begs Gaston to introduce them. An orchestra strikes up in the ballroom and the guests go to dance. Violetta has a fainting spell, and Alfredo stays behind to confess his love.
Act 2
Violetta and Alfredo are living together in a house she has rented on the outskirts of Paris. When Alfredo discovers that Violetta is pawning her jewelry to pay the rent, he goes to Paris to ask for money from his father. Violetta meets Alfredo’s father who persuades Violetta to give up her relationship with his son; she agrees and writes a note to Alfredo breaking off their affair. Alfredo sees an invitation from Flora inviting Violetta to a gambling party. When given Violetta's note breaking off their romance, he suspects Violetta has left him for another lover.
Alfredo enters the party, making bitter comments about love, and gambles recklessly. Violetta arrives on the arm of Baron Douphol, who challenges Alfredo to a game of cards and loses a small fortune to him. As everyone goes to supper, Violetta, fearful of the Baron’s anger, asks Alfredo to leave. Consumed by jealousy, Alfredo humiliates Violetta by hurling his winnings at her feet. As the party guests look on, Baron Douphol challenges him to a duel.
Act 3
Paris is celebrating Mardi Gras, and Violetta is in her bedroom suffering from tuberculosis with not long to live. She reads a letter from Alfredo's father telling of the duel between the Baron Douphol and Alfredo. Alfredo returns just in time to beg forgiveness, and the lovers plan to leave Paris forever. Violetta, feeling her life has returned, staggers towards Alfredo only to fall dead at his feet.
