Why Our Insiders Chose This Tour
A fantastic combination of Sydney’s history, Australian wine and craft beers, this small-group walking tour features a fascinating walk through the historic Rocks district with stops for drinks and food. History comes to life as you explore on foot and visit two historic pubs that date to the 1830s.
What You Can Expect
Stop for a wine tasting at a heritage-listed building in the heart of The Rocks. As you sample Australian wines, learn about the wine industry in Australia, which has become the fourth largest wine exporter in the world, despite an inauspicious start in the early days of the colony.
Continue your walking tour though the neighborhood’s alleys and hear more about the history of The Rocks, which once had a reputation as a dangerous slum; hard to believe when you look around at today's fashionable boutiques and restaurants.
Your next stop takes you into a historic pub for a burger or vegetarian option accompanied by a craft beer that has been paired with your meal. Enjoy your dinner as you soak up the atmosphere of the pub, in operation since the early 1800s.
After dinner, stroll through tucked-away lanes to reach an extensive archaeological site with remnants dating back to the 1790s. Your guide shares further stories about convicts, settlers, bars and even a military coup that played out in The Rocks. Wrap up your tour with a delicious beer at another historic pub close to Circular Quay.
Expect to walk about 1.5 miles (2.5km) at a leisurely pace with plenty of stops. At the end of an entertaining and informative 4-hour tour, make your way to your next destination.
We really liked this walking tour. A very nice introduction to the history of Sydney. The guide was very knowledgeable and helpful. The wine tasting was rather limited - it wasn't a 'described wine' tasting, but rather a $7.50 credit which worked on an automated set up -- enough for two small tastings out of a large variety of wines with no description of the wines or the wineries.
The BBQ on the other hand was excellent. One choose the type of meat and then cooked it yourself on a large grill. My wife and I had lamb, others had beef or even fish or skewers.
All in all, good value for money here.
This was a great walking tour and Michelle was a great host! There was only 4 people in our group so it was really personal!
