Historic villages and rolling pastures. Discover the eastern coast of Tasmania on this six day cycling adventure. Pedal the scenic back roads and explore the picturesque Freycinet National Park. Accommodation each night will be in heritage guest houses and mansions. The back of a bicycle is the only way to see this part of Tasmania!

Your tour takes you from Launceston through rolling farmlands, to the spectacular east coast, then south to Hobart, exploring the historic villages along the way. Visit the beautiful, historic villages of Longford, Ross and Richmond, as well as the convict ruins on the Tasman Peninsula. Green hedges, views across rolling pastures to the distant Western Tiers or islands off the coast and sealed but infrequently used roads make for magnificent cycling on this six day trip. You will be cycling the most scenic sections of the route, with a minibus to carry you past the busier, less scenic roads.

    • This is an all on-road cycling trip and if preferred you can bring along your own bike
    • Maximum group size of 14 passengers, with 1 guide for every 7 passengers.
    • Trip Grading: Easy to Moderate Easy Cycling - gently undulating or flat terrain, less than 50 kilometers (31 miles). Moderate Cycling - some gentle uphills and some short steep gradients, over 50 kilometers (31 miles) available. Steep gradients can be avoided by bus transfer.
    • Weather: The above itinerary should be seen as a guide only. Weather conditions normally remain stable over much of the summer, but it is important to note that weather can change rapidly in Tasmania and as such, weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances may cause the content of the trip to be altered or delayed. Your safety and enjoyment are paramount at all times.
    • Trip Prerequisites: Although having ridden a bicycle recently is an advantage, it is not essential and the guides will be there to assist and guide you. Fitness, however is important and cycling or walking on a regular basis prior to the trip will be beneficial.
    • Health and Fitness Requirements: We require you to be in reasonably good health.
    • Gear List - What to Bring: The equipment list below must be carefully followed and will provide the basis for preliminary gear check. Several of the following items are available for hire in Tasmania .Most outdoor shops will be able to provide extra advice in selecting any new clothing and equipment for this list. A deck of cards, a small musical instrument, a portable game or a good book is a valuable addition to the equipment list.
    • Please Note: Remember that you will need some money for the cycle trip to cover refreshments, admission fees, gifts, curios, etc.. enroute. Approximately $100 should be sufficient. If you are relying on bankcards we recommend that cash be withdrawn in Launceston as outlets on the east coast are rare.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Launceston / Campbell Town (L, D)

Meet at the Adventure Equipment Shop, Launceston at 9:00am. Your guides will be wearing Tasmanian Expeditions T-shirts and will be looking out for you. After setting up the bicycles and checking equipment, you cycle to Longford, then south to Campbell Town, via Cressy and across the Macquarie River. Cycle along hedge-lined country lanes, with views of the Western Tiers and Ben Lomond in the distance. This evening you relax at a beautifully restored heritage accommodation at Campbelltown.

Cycling: 40-70 kilometers (25-44 miles)
Overnight Accommodation: The Foxhunters Return

Day 2: Campbell Town / Swansea (B, L, D)

Cycle through forest and grazing land to the east coast and your destination - the picturesque town of Swansea. The granite cliffs of Freycinet National Park and the clear waters of Great Oyster Bay, provide a wonderful panorama as you cycle gently downhill into Swansea. You have the remainder of the afternoon to explore the beaches and craft shops. Your accommodation is at Meredith House in Swansea.

Cycling: 30-67 kilometers (19-42 miles)
Overnight Accommodation: Meredith House

Day 3: Swansea / Freycinet National Park / Swansea (B, L, D)

You cycle across to Freycinet National Park, via Dolphin Sands and the small ferry at Swanwick. Cycling along the sparkling white sand of Nine Mile Beach is one of the highlights of this trip. This is a spectacular and scenic area of Tasmania, which you take time to explore. Return to Swansea this afternoon where your accommodation is again at the Meredith House.

Cycling: 30 kilometers (19 miles) plus optional return
Walking: Wineglass Bay (optional)
Overnight Accommodation: Meredith House

Day 4: Swansea / Norfolk Bay (B, L, D)

Cycle south to Triabunna, then bus to Eaglehawk Neck. From here you check out the sights - the Blowhole, the Devil's Kitchen and the Tasman Arch. Tonight's accommodation is at the Norfolk Bay Convict Station, which was built in 1839.

Cycling: 55-86 kilometers (35-54 miles)
Overnight Accommodation: Norfolk Bay Convict Station

Day 5: Norfolk Bay / Richmond (B, L, D)

Visit the restored penal colony of Port Arthur in the morning and after lunch you cycle along the shoreline back to Eaglehawk Neck. A short bus ride to avoid some busy roads, then you cycle into the historic town of Richmond. Your accommodation is at a Georgian mansion in Richmond.

Cycling: 40-66 kilometers (25-41 miles)
Overnight Accommodation: Prospect House

Day 6: Richmond / Hobart (B, L)

Spend the morning exploring Richmond, a charming village with some of the best craftwork available in Tasmania. After lunch you ride into Hobart via Risdon. There is time for a brief exploration of Hobart before your trip concludes this afternoon.
