Tauranga Shore Excursion: Te Puia Maori Cultural Centre and Rotorua City Sightseeing

Hamurana Springs, North Island

When your cruise ship pulls into port at Tauranga, your guide picks you up by mini-coach for the scenic drive to Rotorua. Your full-day shore excursion traverses the Tauranga Harbour Bridge, journeying past rolling farmland and through the Pyes Pa Canyons.

Make a stop at Hamurana Spring, the North Island’s deepest freshwater spring, for a stroll past towering California redwoods to Rotorua Lake. Continuing your journey to Rotorua by coach, with a visit the Agrodome to learn about New Zealand's nearly 70 million sheep, along with other farm animals such as alpacas and ostriches.

Reaching Te Puia, you’ll spend time at the New Zealand Maori Arts and Crafts Institute and Whakarewarewa thermal village. See a cultural performance that brings Maori legends to life, and walk past bubbling mud pools and steaming springs to the 100-foot (30-meter) Pohutu Geyser. Then visit the nocturnal kiwi house for a glimpse of the country’s eponymous icon.

On arrival in Rotorua, enjoy a sightseeing tour of city highlights including the historical bath house, Whangapipiro (Rachel Spring) and the Government Gardens.

Your return trip to the Tauranga cruise terminal follows a different route, stopping at Kaituna Waterfalls and Kiwi 360 for a taste of kiwifruit before your shore excursion comes to an end.

A very enjoyable full day of activities. Easy day for the driver/guide as all attractions are solid on their own.

Knowledgeable tour guide and good value for the money. We enjoyed it very much and will use Viator in the future. This was our first tour and it was recommended by people on our cruise.

Outstanding! Van driver was amazing. Because other passengers did not show up, my friend and I had Pete totally to ourselves and saw sites at leisure.

Thorough explanation of some of the Maori culture and traditions. Unfortunately, my camera went kaput and did not take enough photos, my bad. Worth the paid and then some. Thank you, Viator!

Our guide Wendy covered everything we wanted to see and more. Having tickets and tour times organised before we arrived at Rotorua ensured we wasted no time, but we weren't rushed. Because we had time to spare Wendy gave us a tour of Tauranga, having a small group meant no time waiting for a crowd to get on and off a bus, Lunch at a favourite lunch place for Wendy was lovely. Pick up and drop off at our cruise ship was timely and convenient.

It was great, the guide was very informative and we really enjoyed a wonderful experience.
On a different note a would like to say how professional Viator was in refunding our money for a cancelled jet boat trip from Christchurch. We arrived home to find our refund already deposited in our account. I would definitely use Viator again and would recommend them to our friends.

Stops on the way to Rotorua, specifcally the Kiwi 360 Centre and Okere Falls, were OK and the info provided by our guide, Robin, from Zealandier, was very interesting.
However, the big attraction for us was the visit to Te Puia in Rotorua. Our guide was helpful and accompanied us throughout the complex. We really enjoyed Te Puia, including the Maori cultural show, the Maori village and other displays. But the highlight was the geothermal activity and the geysers. That was amazing! The brief visit to other places of interest in Rotorua after lunch was fine too. The drive back from Rotorua to Tauranga was long but the guide tried to make it as interesting as possible and also showed us a bit of Tauranga, Overall we were quite pleased with this tour.

Our guide/bus driver did not give us enough information as the other guides. He was short in explanations and quick to move on. The area was very interesting. It would have been good to interact with some the Maoris. Perhaps some explaining in the wood and weave shop could have been done.
