What You Can Expect
As you travel, chat with your guide about the hit HBO drama itself. Adapted from George Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire novels, the fantasy series documents the warring feuds of several noble families in their battle for power of the Seven Kingdom’s Iron Throne in the mystical land of Westeros.
Mdina, Malta’s perfectly preserved medieval city, proved an ideal backdrop for the Seven Kingdom’s capital of King’s Landing during the first series, and several of the island’s ancient forts were used as Red Keep, King’s Landing’s brooding castle. Trained by the original location manager for Malta Game of Thrones, your guide has an intimate knowledge of all the filming sites as well as juicy insider gossip about key scenes from the first and second seasons.
Stop to see the Great Sept of Baelor, the Game of Thrones church in Gzira that was used in countless scenes including the wedding of King Joffrey Baratheon to Margaery Tyrell. Hear of the exploits of the evil king and continue traveling around the coast to the town of Valletta, home to Fort St Elmo that was used as Sowbelly Row during season one.
Stop for photos by the King’s Landing Skull Chamber in Birgu and pose in the spot where Ned Stark confronted his rival Cersei Lanister in the godswood. Continue to Kalkara to see the hulking 17th-century fortress that provided the setting for Red Keep’s gates, and then stop for lunch (own expense) at a restaurant recommended by your guide.
After relaxing over lunch, travel to Buskett Gardens to explore the lush area of parkland that’s often described as the island’s greenest spot. Stroll around and visit the courtyard of Illyrios Palace where the Stark family discovered a stag killed by a dire wolf. Continue to the walled city of Mdina and walk around its main gate, pretty streets and the atmospheric Mesquita Square. See several different lanes that featured in King’s Landing such as Copper Street, and then finish with a look around St Anton Palace — the real-life residence of the President of Malta — to see the stables, passageway and famous Tower of the Hand.
After your day of recounting the tales of Game of Thrones in Malta, finish your Viator Exclusive tour with a drop-off at your Malta hotel.
